(aka "Vampyros Lesbos" or "Vampyros Lesbos: Die Erbin des Dracula" or "Las vampiras" or "The Strange Adventure of Jonathan Harker" or "Lesbian Vampires" )

directed by Jesús Franco (as Franco Manera)
West Germany/Spain 1971

Director Jesus Franco's surrealistic reworking of Bram Stoker's short story "Dracula's Guest" has acquired a substantial cult following due to its hallucinatory erotic imagery and a sexy performance by Soledad Miranda as vampiric Princess Nadine Korody. Ewa Stroemberg stars as Linda Westinghouse, an American working in a Turkish legal firm. Lucy is plagued and thrilled by a series of erotic dreams concerning a mysterious vampire woman who seduces her before feeding on her blood. When she travels to an island to settle Princess Korody's inheritance, Lucy recognizes the beautiful woman as the vampire from her dreams. A poetic, arty horror film which begs comparison to the work of French director Jean Rollin and Spaniard Jose Larraz, Vampyros Lesbos is an ode to indulgent, funereal excess and is among the most peculiar, gripping films of Franco's career. Dennis Price and Paul Muller co-star, while Franco appears as a hotel porter. Various versions run 89, 82, and 78 minutes.

Comments NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Severin Region FREE Blu-ray: May 2015: Severin's new 1080P transfer matches the color scheme of their original 2000 SD, but the artifacts in that letterboxed transfer are no longer present and it shows more information in the frame than that 15-year old DVD and significantly more than the, now unavailable, green-hued, Image Entertainment DVD from 2004. The Blu-ray is single-layered with a fairly modest bitrate but I expect this will be the best, however imperfect, digital presentation for Vampyros Lesbos. The 1.66:1 aspect ratio HD visuals have a thickness and some texture, are a shade soft but colors look true and show some brightness and depth. Skin tones seem realistic. It looks better in-motion that the stills below.

The audio is transferred via a linear PCM 2.0 channel at 1536 kbps in the original German-language. The music has contributions from director Franco, Manfred Hübler and Sigi Schwab (She Killed in Ecstasy). I wasn't keen on this odd track and at some point the music was so screetchy - it was irritating to my ears. I don't doubt that this very well may be authentic and not the fault of the transfer. There are a few syncs issues but I suppose that is more due to the language some of the actors are speaking (and post-Dubbed). Anyway, despite the replication of the film's original audio - in my opinion it is awful (again, not blaming Severin.) This may give appeal to some who enjoy the uniqueness. There are optional English subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray.

Severin load up on the extras with a 20-minute, interview with Writer/Director Jess Franco entitled Vampyros Jesús where now deceased impresario discusses the film. Sublime Soledad is a 20-minute interview with historian Amy Brown talking about the beautiful Spanish actress and dancer Soledad Miranda who died in 1970 at 27-years of age. This is quite interesting. We also get a 12-minute interview with author Stephen Thrower (Murderous Passions - The Delirious Cinema Of Jess Franco) discussing Vampyros Lesbos. There is a short clip of Franco and a Yoda doll, German trailer and German opening credit sequence and the enclosed DVD has an alternate Spanish language version of the film running 1 1/4 hour.  As Eric tells us:

"The Spanish version of VL on the bonus DVD is a different cut of the film with no nudity (as per Spanish censorship during the General Franco dictatorship), different editing, different narration, and a lot of the score replaced (either because the people who put the Spanish cut together did not like the German score or more likely because the M&E tracks might have been mixed together, making such radical re-editing impossible)."

I'm not a big fan of Jess Franco films but Vampyros Lesbos was better than most I've seen. It has some interesting sequences but, like other works from the director, seem to fall apart relying on the sex and gore than fleshing out the narrative. Still, the extras here are good to appreciate the film and fans of this genre should get this Blu-ray version. Knowing more about Soledad Miranda makes me keener to see She Killed in Ecstasy.
