ADDITION: Severin Region FREE Blu-ray: May 2015: Severin's new 1080P transfer more closely matches the color scheme of Image Entertainment's 2004 SD, but the artifacts in Synapse's 2000 letterboxed transfer are no longer present and colors are brighter, tighter (skin tones cooler than the Image and more realistic than the Synapse) and there is more grain present in the single-layered Blu-ray. The 1.66:1 aspect ratio HD visuals look significantly better and seem at the mercy of the available source showing the film presentation dynamically superior than seen before on digital.

The timing for the Synapse SHE KILLS IN ECSTASY will not be an exact match to new HD master since it restores footage cut from the German domestic cut. The restored version runs 80:25 while the theatrical is 77:06, and the Image is not PAL converted (running 73:45). As Eric tells us in email: "Synapse's Don May stated in a Video Watchdog article that Cine International informed him that the negatives were unusable and first sent faded 35mm prints with missing frames. He had to contend with the 1" masters struck for the PAL Redemption releases (which he had converted to film speed) only for new anamorphic transfers to come out a year later from Second Sight in the UK using better materials provided by Cine International. These newer masters were ported over by Image Entertainment for their 2004 DVDs but were problematic. In addition to vertical cropping of VAMPYROS LESBOS from 1.66:1 to 1.78:1, the image was also cropped more on the right and bottom of the frame, throwing off compositions. SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY was missing some footage from the final murder which was reinserted in the wrong place (although both Synapse and Image/Second Sight masters had little bits of footage that the other did not have). Severin's new HD master restores some surprising violence, sex, and nudity that were cut from the domestic German version, running three minutes longer than the speed-corrected Synapse disc."

The audio is transferred via a linear PCM 2.0 channel at 1536 kbps in the original German-language. The music has contributions from Manfred Hübler and Sigi Schwab (Vampyros Lesbos). Like that BD - it also had some issues probably inherent in the source. Syncs (post-Dubbed) and echo-reverb issues exist but I suppose only a full restoration could remove the imperfections. There are optional English subtitles on the region FREE Blu-ray.

Severin continue with extensive extras including another interview with Jess Franco entitled Jess Killed In Ecstasy where he discusses the film. Sublime Soledad, also found on the Vampyros Lesbos Blu-ray is repeated here - a 20-minute interview with historian Amy Brown talking about the beautiful Spanish actress and dancer Soledad Miranda who died in 1970 at 27-years of age. This is a good video piece. We also get a 13-minute interview with author Stephen Thrower On She Killed In Ecstasy (Murderous Passions - The Delirious Cinema Of Jess Franco) sharing details of themes and production. We also get 6.5-minutes of, frequent Franco-star, Paul Muller discussing the director, plus a German trailer and the second disc is a CD of the Vampyros Lesbos/She Killed In Ecstasy soundtrack (and one other Franco film!).

I liked this 'plot' better than Vampyros Lesbos. It was, also, sexy and unusual. Typically Franco-strange but it holds together reasonably well. Another film from the director that I can more than tolerate. I may even watch it again. This Blu-ray has some real effort put into it and the extras are appreciated. Fans of the genre should indulge. Beyond that - only the adverturous.
