ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Lotta good this week and top spot is going to go to Criterion's Blu-ray of Tarkovsky's Solaris - the contemplative masterpiece has never looked or sounded better. I've previously admitted a hefty bias for Shinoda's Pale Flower - and Criterion have given it too - the gold standard of digital treatments. Our comparison shows that Chaplin's The Great Dictator can't look any better - but Criterion have added heaps of superb extras to investigate at your leisure. Another top 1080P release. I had a wonderful time with the double feature of The Man Who Could Cheat Death / The Skull teaming Hammer and Amicus horrors on a give-away price - a simple purchasing decision. In the vein of an old-fashioned courtroom thriller we get another decent transfer/deal with Jagged Edge. Some of the best Italy has to offer are piled into Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow with Sophie Loren, Marcello Mastroianni and directed by the one and only De Sica. The Blu-ray is a darn sight better than the old DVD and the inclusion of the Vittorio D. documentary makes it a thumbs skyward recommendation. The Comancheros is not my favorite of the western genre but I can state that it has entertainment value. Arrow have given us a funky take on Argento's The Bird With the Crystal Plumage with a debate-riddled aspect ratio that presents a whole new viewing experience - not a bad thing as much as a... curiosity. On the DVD side - Gregory has given us a diligent comparison of the essential Noir Quicksand with 'The Mick' as well as reviews of Chicago Calling with Dan Duryea and Stars in My Crown with Joel McCrea. Eric has covered another mid 70's slam-bang double feature with Fighting Mad / Moving Violation - I tell ya - I'm going to buy that, watch it and like it!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow BD - Stories about three very different women and the men they attract. Adelina sells black-market cigarettes in Naples, is married to the unemployed Carmine, and faces a jail sentence. She can avoid it as long as she's pregnant. Several years and seven children later, Carmine is exhausted, so jail looks inescapable as does her contempt for Carmine. In Milan, Anna drives a Rolls, is bored, and picks up a writer. She talks dreamily of running off with him until he dents her car; that gets her emotional attention. Mara, a Roman call girl, turns the head of a naive seminarian, prompting a run-in with his granny and a vow of abstinence. Mara's fizzy lover from Bologna grows impatient. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011

Fighting Mad / Moving Violation - Fighting Mad: An Arkansas farmer (Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda, Easy Rider) wages a one-man war against corrupt land developers who want to evict him and his neighbors from their farms to create real estate developments and to conduct illegal strip mining. Also starring Lynn Lowry (They Came From Within) and Scott Glenn (The Silence Of The Lambs, Silverado). Written and directed by Academy Award winning director Jonathan Demme (The Silence Of The Lambs, Philadelphia, Stop Making Sense). Moving Violation: While passing through the small town of Rockfield, drifter Eddie Moore (Stephen McHattie, Watchmen) gets harassed by Sheriff Leroy Rankin (Lonny Chapman) and his deputy. When Eddie meets local waitress Cam Johnson (Kay Lenz, White Line Fever) in town, that’s when trouble begins for both. They witness something they weren’t supposed to see and are set up by the sheriff for a murder they didn't commit. Action ensues with high-speed car chases and explosive shootouts. Also starring Eddie Albert, Will Geer and Dick Miller. DVD Release Date: May 24th, 2011

Chicago Calling - Bill Cannon (Dan Duryea) loses everything to alcohol: his job, his family, his self-respect. Soon after his wife and daughter leave him, he receives word his little girl has been injured in a car accident outside Chicago. His wife will call later with news, but Bill’s short the $53 he needs to keep his phone from being disconnected. Filled with anguish, he heads out onto the Los Angeles streets to find some way to come up with the cash. As his character encounters expected cruelty and unexpected kindness, Duryea takes what might have been mere melodrama and turns it into a perceptive examination of one shattered soul. The other fine star of this race-against-the-clock programmer is an unglamorous, lunch-bucket L.A. rarely captured on film. DVD Release Date: January 25th, 2011

Stars in My Crown - Folks in Walsburg may want to pay heed to the brace of pistols holstered onto Josiah Gray’s hips. In time, they may want to pay even more heed to the Bible in his hand. Gray (Joel McCrea) is the newly arrived parson in the woodsy post-Civil War Tennessee town. And the true test of his strength will come when, during his greatest and most dangerous challenge, he sets aside his six-shooters and relies on his faith. McCrea brings a quiet resolve to this touching tale burnished through the recall of the pastor’s impressionable nephew (Dean Stockwell). Based on the novel by Joe David Brown (who would later provide the source novel for Paper Moon), Stars in My Crown shines with a powerful, simple dignity. DVD Release Date: February 22nd, 2011

Quicksand - Quicksand was sandwiched between Mick’s “sports films” which were made with the intention of changing his on screen persona as the perpetual kid from Carvel High by placing him in more mature roles. During this run Mick plays a boxer (Killer McCoy), race car driver (The Big Wheel) and a roller derby skater (Fireball). While all entertaining in there own right, it’s Quicksand that leaves little doubt that Mick has shook off the dust from the town of Carvel and the Hardy family home and entered the adult world. Quicksand served to pave the way for his foray in noir with subsequence films such as The Strip, Drive a Crooked Road, and Baby Face Nelson all released in the ‘50’s. Image Ent. DVD Release Date: November 7th, 2000

The Great Dictator BD - In his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech. Blu-ray Release Date: May 24th, 2011

Pale Flower BD - In this cool, seductive jewel of the Japanese New Wave, a yakuza, fresh out of prison, becomes entangled with a beautiful and enigmatic gambling addict; what at first seems a redemptive relationship ends up leading him further down the criminal path. Bewitchingly shot and edited, and laced with a fever-dream-like score by Toru Takemitsu, this gangster romance was a breakthrough for the idiosyncratic Masahiro Shinoda. The pitch-black Pale Flower (Kawaita hana) is an unforgettable excursion into the underworld. Blu-ray Release Date: May 17th, 2011

Solaris BD - Ground control has been receiving strange transmissions from the three remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate, he experiences the strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness. In Solaris, legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky creates a brilliantly original science fiction epic that challenges our preconceived notions of love, truth, and humanity itself. Blu-ray Release Date: May 24th, 2011

The Bird With the Crystal Plumage BD - This is Dario Argento's directorial debut and with it, he pretty much put giallo movies on the map. That's how potent and influential this movie turned out to be. The premise is nothing special: an American writer in Rome sees a murder attempt but is helpless to try and stop it, and so gets entangled in the investigation to stop the murderer. The premise is not so important as how everything plays out. Blu-ray Release date: May 23rd, 2011

The Man Who Could Cheat Death / The Skull BD - The Man Who Could Cheat Death features a horror filled tale starring Anton Diffring as Dr. Georges Bonnet, a man with a hideous obsession to live forever all he needs are the glands of some very unwilling donors. Also starring Christopher Lee and the beautiful horror legend Hazel Court, this film is a suspense-filled ride for all who enjoy classic horror cinema. The Skull weaves a chilling tale surrounding the real-life terrors of the Marquis de Sade. Featuring outstanding performances by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, this tale introduces Dr. Christopher Maitland (Cushing) who purchases the infamous skull of the Marquis de Sade, a decision that he was warned against by his good friend - and previous skull owner - Matthew Phillips (Lee). The question is whether or not Dr. Maitland will live to regret his decision. Blu-ray Release date: May 3rd, 2011

Jagged Edge BD - A grisly homicide... a sensational trial... a forbidden affair it's Jagged Edge, a razor-sharp suspense thriller about crime, punishment and passion. Jeff Bridges is the prime suspect and Glenn Close plays the attorney who falls in love with him. When a San Francisco socialite is viciously murdered, her publisher-husband, Jack Forrester (Bridges), is accused of committing the crime. Teddy Barnes (Close) decides to defend the charming, manipulative Jack, only to disregard legal ethics by having an affair with him. With the help of private eye Sam Ransom (Robert Loggia), she takes on a ruthless District Attorney (Peter Coyote) who's using the case as a political stepping stone. Blu-ray Release date: May 17th, 2011

The Comancheros BD - John Wayne is a Texas Ranger in this rollicking, good humored western, assigned to bring an arms-running gang to justice. After Wayne arrests one of the criminals, matters are complicated when they wander into an area controlled by the Comancheros: a group of Anglos aiding the warring Comanche Indians. Based on the novel by Paul I. Wellman, THE COMANCHEROS was the last film for director Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA). Blu-ray Release date: May 17th, 2011
