directed by Irving Pichel
USA 1950

Quicksand was sandwiched between Mick’s “sports films” which were made with the intention of changing his on screen persona as the perpetual kid from Carvel High by placing him in more mature roles. During this run Mick plays a boxer (Killer McCoy), race car driver (The Big Wheel) and a roller derby skater (Fireball). While all entertaining in there own right, it’s Quicksand that leaves little doubt that Mick has shook off the dust from the town of Carvel and the Hardy family home and entered the adult world. Quicksand served to pave the way for his foray in noir with subsequence films such as The Strip, Drive a Crooked Road, and Baby Face Nelson all released in the ‘50’s.

In an effort to cover most essential film noirs, we are going to review some past DVD releases that we may have missed. Quicksand is one of those titles that has been steadily appearing is various public domain compilations. For this comparison, we chose 2 releases from studios known for their better-than-standard PD releases - Image and Roan Group, as well as a standard PD disc from Front Row. Based on the images below, especially the last set of images, the damage marks show that the basis for these releases was the same print, but different generation of prints was used for each release. All three single-layered discs are interlaced, but for small studio discs released over 10 years ago, both Image and Roan Group discs can be recommended. Roan Group release looks squeezed on the sides and is windowboxed, but it has slightly more information on all four sides. English mono audio also better on releases from Image Entertainment and Roan Group than Front Row, where the sound was a bit distorted.

The Image disc, released as part of Wade Williams Collection, includes an unrelated number of trailers for other films in that collection, mostly all for Sci-Fi films. Roan Group's DVD includes a few text screens of film's credits and info about background about the film. Unfortunately, an opportunity to get Mickey Rooney provide a commentary or a short interview about the film, is missed for both releases. A highly recommended film noir with two worthy DVD releases.
