ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Orson Welles’ delirious and inventive film noir The Lady From Shanghai finally gets the ultimate, region FREE, Blu-ray release from Indicator. Order, own, finally be content. Criterion bring us Palme d’Or–winning Dheepan on Blu-ray. French filmmaker Jacques Audiard impacting and emotional drama of identity is a must-see film experience. Peckinpah's brilliant Ride the High Country , on Blu-ray, is a massive leap beyond the old DVD and Warner Archive's new HD is an strong recommendation! Fans of the golden age of the classic musical will have a hard time not loving vibrantly colorful La La Land's gorgeous Cinemascope on Blu-ray. Still an absolute favorite of mine - it was a great pleasure to view Comrades: Almost a Love Story, with Maggie Cheung nand Leon Lai, on new Warner (HK) Blu-ray. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray of Walter Hill's debut film, Hard Times provide us the definitive 1080P edition, and it's region FREE to boot! Fabulous Films (UK) bring us the superior Blu-ray edition of Carl Reiner 's spoof, and Noir homage, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid with Steve Martin and Rachel Ward. The more I see of Walerian Borowczyk's work, the more I appreciate it and this hold true for my viewings of Olive Film's Blu-rays of Blanche and his bizarre, Goto, Isle of Love. Visually contemplative cinema. Blake Edwards, Noir-ish, Experiment in Terror with Lee Remick and Glenn Ford gets another appealing, region FREE, supplement-filled, Blu-ray release from Indicator. Fan of the effective, 70's science-fiction gem Colossus: The Forbin Project will be more pleased with Medium Rare's newest Blu-ray release.  What's not to love about Roger Corman's The Wasp Woman and it's equally creature-feature-esque The Alligator People with Beverly Garland? Both get new Blu-ray releases and fans relish the results. Similar from the era we get I Bury the Living with Richard Boone reaching Blu-ray status and the questionable, but amusing, The Screaming Skull also garnering a 1080P edition. Good times indeed! Lesser known works from lauded directors include Jacques Demy's playful The Pied Piper and Claude Chabrol’s witty and darkly comic Ophélia - both getting reviewed on Blu-ray this week. Matthew McConaughey is enough of a reason to watch a fascinating retelling of the 90's Bre-X scandal - entitled Gold and on Blu-ray for home theatre viewing. Catfight is an over-the-top hoot with a virtual cage-match between Sandra Oh and Anne Heche. Cute and funny, but no masterpiece. This week offers two, rare, Nunsploitation genre Blu-ray editions from Severin Films with Bruno Mattei's shocker The Other Hell and Mariano Baino's disturbing Dark Waters. Habit-forming. Early 80's, dual-identity, crime drama, Double Exposure has support from Joanna Pettet and Seymour Cassel but remains an elusive production. On DVD this week, Eric reviewed a sex and swastika Nazisploitation effort, Elsa Fraulein S.S. and the 70's Spanish Horror Crimson.

"It’s not a threat — it’s a promise...." - Noirish quote from many films...

Best in good health to all of you!.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Gold (McConaughey) BD - An American businessman named Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey), who has driven his family's mining company into the ground, tries to reverse his fortunes by prospecting for gold in the jungles of Indonesia. With the help of an experienced geologist (Edgar Ramirez), Wells actually manages to unearth a massive gold deposit, but he is soon forced to protect his find from ruthless Wall Street traders. Bryce Dallas Howard co-stars. Directed by Stephen Gaghan, Gold was inspired by a true story. Blu-ray Release Date: May 2nd, 2017

La La Land BD - Mia and Seb are throwbacks — if not quite to Ginger and Fred then surely to Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney or Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly — but they are also citizens of the present. They are better at acting than the other stuff, able to express emotion in nonmusical scenes with candor and conviction, but a little stiff-limbed and wobbly-voiced when the moment arrives for hoofing and chirping. In this, they’re pretty much the opposite of those earlier performers, who were vaudevillian troupers before they were thespians. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Catfight BD - Veronica (Sandra Oh) and Ashley (Anne Heche) were good friends in college, but now find themselves in very different walks of life. Veronica has become the entitled, wine-loving wife of a rich businessman, while Ashley, along with her lover Lisa (Alicia Silverstone), struggles to make ends meet as an artist. When they bump into each other at a fancy cocktail party, what starts as a friendly conversation quickly turns caustic before erupting into a vicious, bloody fight that will change both of their lives forever. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Comrades: Almost a Love Story BD - Mainland immigrant Li Xiaojun (Leon Lai) arrives in Hong Kong in 1986 to build a better future. Hindered by language and customs, he comes to befriend Hong Kong girl Qiao Li (Maggie Cheung), a hard-working young woman who favors money over friends. Qiao Li is initially wary of becoming friends with the backwards Xiaojun, but the two find much more in common than they ever realized. They go from friends to casual lovers, but times and circumstances drive a wedge between them. Blu-ray Release Date: March 2nd, 2017

Colossus: The Forbin Project BD - Tucked away in a secret location in the Rockies, Dr. Charles Forbin (Eric Braeden) has developed a massive computer system, dubbed "Colossus," that is supposed to ensure the nation's safety against nuclear attack. But when Colossus connects to a similar Russian computer, "Guardian," the intelligent machines begin conducting a private dialog. Nervous as to what they might be plotting, Forbin severs the connection, only to have Colossus threaten a nuclear attack if the link isn't restored. Medium Rare Blu-ray Release date: March 27th, 2017

The Alligator People BD - Newly married nurse Joyce Webster (Beverly Garland) doesn't know what to think when her husband, Paul (Richard Crane), disappears during a train ride. She hires private investigators and eventually tracks him to an old bayou plantation, where the owner (Frieda Inescort) insists she's never heard of Paul. Joyce sticks around anyway and soon learns that local doctor Mark Sinclair (George Macready) has been using a life-altering alligator serum on the town's residents, and that Paul is among them. Blu-ray Release Date: March 27th, 2017

The Screaming Skull BD - When widower Eric (John Hudson) bring his mentally fragile new bride Jenni home to the palatial estate of his first wife, strange things begin to happen. Jenni is certain she is being tormented by Eric’s former wife who died under mysterious circumstances. But no one else seems to hear the ominous screams or see the rolling skull that comes knocking at the front door. Much like master showman William Castle, the producers of the film promised a free burial service for anyone who died while watching the film. Of course, this never happened. Or did it? Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid BD - In this post-modernist exercise, star/writer Steve Martin and director Carl Reiner spoof the film noir yarns of the '40s with Martin playing gumshoe Rigby Reardon, who interacts with a legion of Hollywood greats -- including Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Edward Arnold, Barbara Stanwyck, Ingrid Bergman, Veronica Lake, Bette Davis, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford -- in a succession of intercut clips from seventeen vintage Hollywood films. Fabulous Films (UK) Blu-ray Release date: April 10th, 2017

I Bury the Living BD - Through a series of chilling coincidences, the newly-elected director of a cemetery (Richard Boone) begins to believe that he can cause the deaths of living owners of burial plots by merely changing the push-pin color from white (living) to black (dead) on a large wall map of the cemetery. This chilling tale is co-produced and director by cult filmmaker, and father to Empire/Full Moon founder Charles, Albert Band. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Blanche BD - ased on Juliusz Sowacki's 19th-century play Mazepa but relocated to 13th-century France, Blanche tells the story of the beautiful young wife (Ligia Branice) of a nobleman many decades older (French acting legend Michel Simon). As innocent as her name suggests, Blanche becomes the unwilling centre of attention in a power struggle between her husband, the visiting King and his page, the latter a notorious womaniser. Its unique visual style resembles a medieval fresco, and its period-instruments soundtrack, adapting the ancient Carmina Burana song book, was years ahead of its time. Olive Blu-ray Release date: April 25th, 2017

The Other Hell BD - At the peak of his ‘80s excess, Italian sleaze maestro Bruno Mattei – using the alias ‘Stefan Oblowsky’ – stunned audiences with THE OTHER HELL, a raging Nunsploitation shocker about a series of brutal murders in a depraved convent. And while his cinematic legacy may remain controversial, Mattei here delivers a surprisingly stylized yet undeniably blasphemous orgy of stabbings, stigmata, Satanism, sexual violence and graphic savagery that ranks among his very best. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

The Pied Piper BD - The great Jacques Demy directed this masterful retelling of the classic children's tale. Set in the Middle Ages, the divided town of Hamelin tries in vain to rid itself of the Black Plague. Music legend Donovan plays a mysterious musician who arrives in town promising to rid the town of their rat infestation by playing his magical flute, but the townspeople cannot put aside their personal agendas and ask the piper to help them with other deeds, as the town s petty and greedy leader, the sublimely creepy Donald Pleasence attempts to take advantage of their new savior. With great music and spectacular costumes and sets, The Pied Piper is a fascinating take on a familiar legend. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Hard Times BD - Writer-director Walter Hill's debut film, Hard Times (1975), stars the legendary Charles Bronson as a laconic street fighter who joins forces in Depression-era New Orleans with a fast-talking promoter (James Coburn) and a drug-addicted cut man (Strother Martin) to make some hard-earned cash in the illegal fight game. With its clean narrative, detailed period setting, superb cinematography by Philip Lathrop, and striking action sequences (elegantly edited by future director Roger Spottiswoode), Hard Times is an exhilarating jump-start for one of the 1970s' most influential filmmakers. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: April 24th, 2017

Ophélia BD - Imagining himself a modern day Hamlet, Ivan goes about wooing Lucy (Juliette Mayniel, Eyes Without a Face), the beautiful daughter of his parents’ groundskeeper, convincing her to become the de facto Ophelia of the piece. Concocting a clever ruse to unmask the accused, Ivan’s fever dream of revenge takes an unexpected turn in Ophélia, Claude Chabrol’s witty and darkly comic reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Hamlet. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Double Exposure BD - Michael Callan stars as Adrian Wilde, a prolific photographer whose specialty is shooting nude models for men’s magazines. His life starts to unravel when he begins to experience strange and almost lifelike dreams in which he murders the very women he’s been photographing. What’s more is that he soon discovers that they might not be dreams after all. Has he started to lose touch with reality; is he a calculated killer attempting to create an unbelievable alibi; or is something much more sinister and deadly afoot…Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Goto, Isle of Love BD - Its thinly veiled critique of totalitarianism saw it banned in both Communist Poland and Fascist Spain (to Borowczyk's delight), but the film is most notable for its uniquely original atmosphere, in which bizarre props and sets (designed by Borowczyk himself) are given as much weight as the human actors. Its grave beauty is underscored to perfection by one of Handel s organ concertos. Olive Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

Dheepan BD - With this Palme d’Or–winning drama, which deftly combines seemingly disparate genres, French filmmaker Jacques Audiard cemented his status as a titan of contemporary world cinema. In an arresting performance, the nonprofessional actor Antonythasan Jesuthasan (himself a former child soldier) stars as a Tamil fighter who, along with a woman and a child posing as his wife and daughter, flees war-torn Sri Lanka only to land in a Paris suburb blighted by drugs. As the makeshift family embarks on a new life, Dheepan settles into an intimate social-realist mode before tightening into a dynamic turf-war thriller, as well as an unsettling study of the psychological aftereffects of combat. Searing and sensitive, Audiard’s film is a unique depiction of the refugee experience as a continuous crisis of identity. Blu-ray Release Date: May 23rd, 2017

Dark Waters BD - It has been acclaimed as "visually amazing" (Videoscope), "deeply disturbing" (BBC Radio One), "a must see for serious horror buffs" (Film Review), and compared to the works of Bergman, Bava and Argento. Now experience the modern Nunsploitation masterpiece from co-writer/director Mariano Baino as you've never seen or heard it before: When a young Englishwoman attempts to discover her mysterious connection to a remote island convent, she will unlock an unholy communion of torment, blasphemy and graphic demonic depravity. Blu-ray Release Date: April 25th, 2017

The Wasp Woman BD - A film that highlights Corman's ability to ring interesting changes on proven formulas. The she-creature and the havoc she wreaks are both predictable enough, but it's a novel touch that she's a beautician, and that her metamorphosis is caused by experiments with new cosmetics ingredients. Susan Cabot (always Corman's favourite female sadist-figure) anchors the sexual mayhem in a very credible characterisation. Blu-ray Release Date: April 21st, 2017

Ride the High Country BD - A much-loved revisionist Western, director Peckinpah's second feature film proved to be a bittersweet swan song for the Old West and a classy farewell to the screen for actors Scott and--for some years--McCrea. Set at the turn of the century, the film opens in the town of Hornitos, which is in the midst of a celebration. Down the crowded main street rides Steve Judd (McCrea), an aging former lawman who has seen better days. He mistakenly thinks the cheers of the crowd are for him, but is abruptly reminded of the changing times when a car nearly runs him over. Blu-ray Release Date: April 4th, 2017

The Lady From Shanghai BD - Orson Welles’ delirious and inventive film noir classic is a dazzling cinematic jigsaw puzzle. Welles plays a sailor who rescues a young woman (played by his real-life ex-wife Rita Hayworth) from a violent assault only to fall under her murderous spell… Blu-ray Release Date: April 24th, 2017

Experiment in Terror BD - Writer/ director Blake Edwards followed up the enormous success of the chic and sophisticated Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) with a decided change-of-pace: Experiment in Terror (1962), a Neo-Noir character-driven thriller featuring non-clichéd, nuanced performances from Lee Remick, Glenn Ford, and Ross Martin as a calculating psychopath. It was the first film Blake produced as well as directed, and his first effort to be filmed in black-and-white. Blu-ray Release Date: April 24th, 2017

Elsa Fraulein S.S. - A train full of beautiful young women have been ordered to service the men aboard; men being taken to help fight for the Nazis. Elsa, the leader, specialises in torturing those whose loyalty to the Nazi party comes into question. A group of brave Frenchman are planning to derail the train, while planning an attack that will strike back at the Third Reich. DVD Release Date: April 17th, 2017

Crimson - When a robbery goes horribly wrong and their leader, Jack is shot in the head, a group of criminals go to extreme measures to save their friends life. With the help of a local doctor the gang devise a uniquely plan - to kill their worst enemy, throw his body in front of a train and use the brain from the severed head as a transplant! The operation is a success, all seems well...that is until the brains former owner starts living out his murderous past. DVD Release Date: April 17th, 2017
