(aka "Model Killer" or "Psycho Killer")
directed by William Byron Hillman
USA 1983
Michael Callan stars as Adrian Wilde, a
prolific photographer whose specialty is shooting nude models
for men’s magazines. His life starts to unravel when he begins
to experience strange and almost lifelike dreams in which he
murders the very women he’s been photographing. What’s more is
that he soon discovers that they might not be dreams after all.
Has he started to lose touch with reality; is he a calculated
killer attempting to create an unbelievable alibi; or is
something much more sinister and deadly afoot… Co-starring Joanna Pettet (Welcome to Arrow Beach) and Seymour Cassel (Killing of a Chinese Bookie), and featuring atmospheric, scope photography by R. Michael Stringer, DOUBLE EXPOSURE is a slick and suspenseful psychological mystery fused with slasher and giallo elements. Inspired by director William Bryon Hillman’s 1974 film, The Photographer, but taking a much darker and more violent approach, Vinegar Syndrome brings this distinctly original horror obscurity to Blu-ray, newly restored from its original 35mm camera negative. |

Blu-ray
Audio is transferred in a faithful DTS-HD Master mono track (24-bit) and has a small punch but is mostly, authentically, flat with audible dialogue. Jack Goga (who was responsible for some tracks in The Last Detail) does the score, which is also offered in an isolated option. It suits the film servicing the tension. There are optional English subtitles (button only - not menu driven) and the Blu-ray disc is Region FREE.Supplements include a new audio commentary by director William Byron Hillman and he's seems reasonable with some decent, in unremarkable input with someone asking occasional questions via phone. 'Exposing Double Exposure' is a 1/2 hour interview with cinematographer R. Michael Stringer and 'Staying on Task' is a 20-minute interview with script supervisor Sally Stringer. There is a theatrical trailer in 1080P and a promotional still gallery with posters and lobby cards. The package has reversible cover artwork by Derek Gabryszak. Not the most polished production but it has a realism angle that works - decent performances too. There is nudity/sexploitation but the concept seemed a valid one and I did watch it till the end. There is certainly a nostalgia factor here as well and the Blu-ray is a giant leap beyond the DVD. No classic but has a gritty, grassroots, charm. I might even watch it again. Kudos to Vinegar Syndrome for their love affair with these titles and the work they put into the packages, extras... they deserve our respect, when most major studios simply rehash... Bravo guys! - Gary and Eric |
