ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Mostly European Blu-rays covered this week. BFI's region FREE Cassavetes' masterpieces Faces and Shadows are fabulous packages. Rich, grain-filled transfers bring out the absolute best in these presentations. It makes me ache for The Killing of a Chinese Bookie in 1080P. Jean Renoir’s antiwar drama La Grande Illusion looks so impressive on Blu-ray from Studio Canal - just an excellent, stacked, Digi-book. Lubitsch's To Be or Not To Be - now on Blu-ray - might be given top spot in any other week - and deserves its share of accolades. More out of France - Carlotta's HD rendering of Black Narcissus - a favorite film - captures the same Technicolor essence as the Criterion Blu-ray edition and we give it a strong thumbs skyward. It was a true please to revisit Abbott and Costello's Buck Privates in the new format. Great fun all 'round if not a stellar image realization. Leonard made another guest appearance for a review of the Acorn Media Blu-ray version of the TV mini-series of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Alec Guinness. Those keen on Charlotte Rampling may wish to watch The Look - a not-so-intimate but still revealing expose on this mesmerizing world cinema actress. On DVD Shout! Factory compile another Corman cheese set with the focus on women in uniform entitled Roger Corman: The Nurses Collection - yes, it's bad but this tends to add flavor to the limited, and frequently exploitive, productions. Speaking of which I still seek out the 50's sci-fi Drive-In genre and out of Japan we get a DVD of the schlock-y Invasion of the Saucer-Men - a quintessential example of efforts with more money in marketing and the posters than the film itself - still the niche appeal will always be there. I modestly enjoyed the Heston and Rhonda Fleming western Pony Express -another bare-bones edition from OIive Films who also release Cecil B. DeMille's pirate adventure The Buccaneer on SD. Those who missed last year's boxset may wish to, at least, indulge in Ernie Kovacs: The ABC Specials - relaxing, iconic comedy. Eric covered the sleazy-looking True Story of a Woman in Jail - a Nikkatsu sexploitation flic and he compared two DVDs of the chilling 70's horror effort Tourist Trap. Have a super-duper week till we talk next!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Ernie Kovacs: The ABC Specials - Before his untimely death at the age of 42, television pioneer Ernie Kovacs left us with a sublime body of comedy work whose influence can be seen on everything from Monty Python to SNL and David Letterman. He made eight TV specials for ABC in 1961, the final year of his life, and they show Kovacs at the peak of his creative experimentation with the medium, featuring many of his comic masterpieces and iconic set pieces. Five of these programs are presented here in complete uncut form, along with many of his celebrated - and delightfully offbeat - commercials for Dutch Masters cigars. DVD Release Date: April 17th, 2012

Tourist Trap - One of the creepier PG-rated horror films of the seventies, this early Charles Band pre-Empire Pictures/Full Moon production TOURIST TRAP was in good company when it was picked up theatrically by Compass International, the distributor that previously released John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN (and would later put out the creepy HELL NIGHT). It is also well-remembered by diehard horror fans from the early days of video (it's creepy poster art stood out from the garish borders of Media Home Entertainment's 1984 VHS tape). DVD Release Date: April 30th, 2012

Invasion of the Saucer-Men - Invasion of the Saucer Men can't make up its mind whether it wants to be a comedy, a j.d. melodrama or a horror outing.... When a spaceship lands in the woods, Johnny (Steve Terrell) and Joan (Gloria Castillo) accidentally run over one of the aliens. In retaliation, the saucer-men kill Joe (Frank Gorshin), an opportunistic boozehound who stumbles across the body. Meanwhile, the hand of the extraterrestrial corpse detaches itself from its body and wreaks havoc on the countryside. But the aliens are foiled when it is discovered that they cannot withstand the glare of automobile headlights! The Saucer Men costumes were designed by Paul Blaisdell, who was certainly capable of better work. Lyn Osborn, the former Cadet Happy on TV's Space Patrol, makes his final screen appearance as Frank Gorshin's drinking buddy. Originally released on a double bill with I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Invasion of the Saucer Creatures was cheaply remade for television as The Eye Creatures (1966). DVD Release Date: September 21st, 2011

Pony Express - Striking outdoor locations highlight Frank Gruber's story, which details the founding of the Pony Express and how it prevented California from becoming an independent republic. Ruthless killers (Henry Brandon, Stuart Randall) trying to incite a rebellion against the United States, employ devious schemes to prevent Buffalo Bill Cody (Charlton Heston) and Wild Bill Hickok (Forrest Tucker) from getting the Pony Express started. Rhonda Fleming and Michael Moore play siblings who are loyal Californians, violently opposed to the Pony Express and statehood. Directed by Jerry Hopper (The Secret of the Incas). DVD Release Date: April 24th, 2012

The Buccaneer - Fredric March plays the swashbuckling pirate Jean Lafitte, operating of the coast of New Orleans, Lafitte and his thousand pirates plunder all passing ships for the wealth, but refuses to attack any vessel flying the American flag. Lafitte is offered a pardon by Andrew Jackson (Hugh Sothern), if he and his men fight by his side against the powerful British redcoats. As good as his word, Lafitte stands shoulder to shoulder with Jackson as they ward off the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Rescued from a sunken ship by Lafitte, Dutch maiden Gretchen (Franciska Gaal) falls madly in love with the dashing pirate, but he only has eyes for aristocratic Louisiana belle Annette (Margot Grahame), the daughter of Governor Claiborne (Douglass Dumbrille) who's Lafitte's arch nemesis. The stellar cast includes Akim Tamiroff, Walter Brennan and Anthony Quinn. Directed by the great Cecil B. DeMille who also produced a remake of The Buccaneer in 1958. DVD Release Date: April 24th, 2012

La Grande Illusion BD - One of the very first prison escape movies, Grand Illusion is hailed as one of the greatest films ever made. Jean Renoir’s antiwar masterpiece stars Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay as French soldiers held in a World War I German prison camp, and Erich von Stroheim as the unforgettable Captain von Rauffenstein. Blu-ray Release Date: February 21st, 2012

To Be or Not To Be BD - On its initial release this film was a flop, deemed as bad taste since America had just gone to war. Also, 33 year old Carole Lombard was killed one month previous to the premiere, in a plane crash whilst selling U.S. war bonds, tragically cutting off her distinguished career of screwball comedies asnl light dramas. But as time has passed, the film has received much praise from film historians and has finally made a profit, if belatedly. It is, admittedly, riddled with wartime propaganda, as the Nazis are all bungling incompetents arresting each other and the RAF flyers are all high spirited heroes, but these touches add to the comic value of the piece. Note too that Lubitsch was himself a Berliner of Jewish descent and keen to show his opposition to the Nazis. Blu-ray Release Date: February 21st, 2012

Faces BD - The disintegration of a marriage is dissected in John Cassavetes’ searing Faces. Shot in high-contrast 16mm black and white, the film follows the futile attempts of captain of industry Richard (John Marley) and his wife, Maria (Lynn Carlin), to escape the anguish of their empty marriage in the arms of others. Featuring astonishingly powerful, nervy performances from Marley, Carlin, and Cassavetes regulars Gena Rowlands and Seymour Cassel, Faces confronts suburban alienation and the battle of the sexes with a brutal honesty and compassion rarely matched in cinema. Blu-ray Release Date: April 23rd, 2012

Shadows BD - John Cassavetes’ directorial debut revolves around an interracial relationship between Lelia (Lelia Goldoni), a light-skinned black woman living in New York City with her two brothers, and Tony (Anthony Ray), a white man. Their relationship crumbles when Tony meets Lelia’s brother Hugh (Hugh Herd), a talented dark-skinned jazz singer who struggling to find work, and discovers that Lelia is actually black. Shot on location in Manhattan with an amateur cast and crew, Cassavetes’ Shadows is a visionary work and a landmark in the history of American independent film. Blu-ray Release Date: April 23rd, 2012

Charlotte Rampling: The Look BD - In this intellectual travelogue La Légende Charlotte Rampling muses with friends and colleagues on celebrity, age, desire and love. Rampling debates and cogitates with creative as diverse as photographers Peter Lindbergh and Juergen Teller and writer Paul Auster as she travels from Paris to New York. She converses in cafés and houseboats, and delves into the very essence of life, death and The Look. Blu-ray Release date: April 10th, 2012

True Story of a Woman in Jail - A group of young women is thrown into a horrible juvenile hall, due to their illegal acts. They soon wish they were back on the outside, as a gang of inmates subjects this "fresh meat" to the horrors of being locked up. Mayumi, a new inmate with a mysterious past, stands up for herself and fights back! No one is going to push her around, and she hatches an escape plan to seek revenge on the person who had her incarcerated. True Story Of A Woman In Jail: Sex Hell is a sleazy, sexually graphic and surprisingly violent entry in the "women in prison" genre. The opening uniform changing, nude medical examination sessions, communal scrubbings in the bathhouse, nimble-fingered lesbians and vicious catfights are all here-- and more! DVD Release Date: April 10th, 2012

Buck Privates BD - Filmed on a B-picture budget, Buck Privates was Universal's biggest box-office hit of 1941, firmly securing the movie... popularity of the studio's hot new team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The story is fairly evenly divided between the antics of Bud and Lou-here cast as sidewalk salesmen Slicker Smith and Herbie Brown-and the romantic triangle involving Randolph Parker III (Lee Bowman), Judy Gray (Jane Frazee) and Bob Martin (Alan Curtis). Escaping the wrath of policeman Mike Collins (Nat Pendleton), Slicker and Herbie duck into a nearby movie theater, which unbeknownst to them has been converted into a US Army recruiting center. As the boys are reluctantly inducted into the Service, wealthy draftee Parker hopes to pull a few strings to avoid putting on a uniform, while Parker's former chauffeur Martin willingly answers his call to the Colors. Once ensconced in boot camp, Slicker and Herbie continually run afoul of their sergeant, who is none other than their old nemesis Mike the cop. Blu-ray Release date: April 17th, 2012

Roger Corman Nurses Collection - Private Duty Nurses: A trio of beautiful private-duty nurses that practice more than the medical arts must confront underground drug traffickers, racism and murder in their local hospital. Night Call Nurses: Three nurses who work in the psych ward really have their hands full dealing with nutty patients, creepy stalkers, and black revolutionaries Young Nurses: More young nurses apply special therapy in their daily rounds, as they work against a drug ring operating out of the hospital. Candy Stripe Nurses: Sexy comedy follows the exploits of three volunteer nurses. DVD Release Date: April 17th, 2012

Black Narcissus BD - This explosive work about the conflict between the spirit and the flesh is the epitome of the sensuous style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. A group of nuns—played by some of Britain’s finest actresses, including Deborah Kerr, Kathleen Byron, and Flora Robson—struggle to establish a convent in the Himalayas, while isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. A darkly grand film that won Oscars for Alfred Junge’s art direction and Jack Cardiff’s cinematography , Black Narcissus is one of the greatest achievements by two of cinema’s true visionaries. Carlotta Blu-ray Release Date: March 7th, 2012

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (TV version) (Mini-Series) BD - No doubt remains: a mole has infiltrated "the Circus," code name for the British Secret Intelligence Service. It can only be one of four men operating at the very highest level. Sidelined agent George Smiley is covertly tapped to root out the mole, a task that requires a painstaking dig through the double-blind world of Cold War-era espionage and his own past. Alec Guinness brilliantly captures the weary heart and steely soul of John le Carré’s master spy in an intricate drama hailed as one of the finest ever made for television.
