ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey):Often referenced as the definitive modern heist film, Michael Mann's Heat via 20th Century Fox new Remastered - Director's Definitive Edition Blu-ray justly receives top spot - a 4K restoration with improved audio and new extras that advances easily as the definitive edition of this masterpiece. Ross Lipman's Notfilm is brilliant on Blu-ray from Milestone. Tailor-made for serious and casual film fans I still rate Chan-wook Park's erotic The Handmaiden and we've identified a key difference between the Canadian and upcoming Sony Blu-rays. What's the Matter With Helen? is a deceptive murder-horror, now on Blu-ray, with Shelley Winters and Debbie Reynolds as women trapped by a secret. Kudos are deserved for Kino's treatment of atmospheric Chamber of Horrors and murder mystery Invisible Ghost as both Blu-ray editions included worthwhile commentaries. Bravo! Venom is a rare horror/thriller and has Susan George, Oliver Reed, Sterling Hayden, Nicol Williamson and Sarah Miles - rereleased by Blue Underground sans the collector's booklet. Fans of Ray Harryhausen's work need only know of his participation in The Valley of Gwangi to desire Warner Archive's new Blu-ray. Z.P.G. exports a dystopian future and, on Blu-ray, evokes similar apocalypse-related films. Witchtrap is an off-kilter horror that kinda works and is now available on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome, however their 1080P releases of China Girl with Annette Haven may attract a, decidedly, different following. Joan Collins stars as The Bitch - a beautiful gal in an ugly film. I'll always prefer to remember her as Edith Keeler. Only one DVD covered this past week - but it's a good one - The Mad Miss Manton has Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda initiating their impressive screwball comedic chemistry later found in The Lady Eve.

"Kiss me, Mike. I want you to kiss me. The liar’s kiss that says I love you and means something else.” ― Kiss Me Deadly

Our world just semes like it is fracturing - trust me - it's going to be okay.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Notfilm BD - The confluence of Keaton and Beckett, two of the greatest theatrical geniuses of the 20th century, should have given rise to something more estimable than this pretentious, high-flown art thing, but despite that, the film – or should I say Film – has its undeniable fascinations. Ross Lipman, the much-admired film preservationist making his directing debut, would certainly agree. His seven years of painstaking detective work investigating the history of how “Film” was made has paid off in his own film “Notfilm.” Blu-ray Release date: March 7th, 2017

China Girl BD - The incredible Annette Haven stars as renowned biochemist, Teresa Hardgrave. Assigned to work with top government agent, David Chase (Tom Douglass), to infiltrate a sinister organization determined to rule the world through sexual dominance, Teresa soon finds herself kidnapped and held in in the clutches of evil mastermind, Madame Woo and her vicious boss, Y.C. Chan (James Hong) who doses her with ‘love serum’ and forces her to undergo a series of excruciating erotic punishments. Will David be able to save her before the serum drives her to the brink of sexual insanity? Blu-ray Release date: March, 2017

Z.P.G. BD - This provocative sci-fi outing is set in an over-populated, horribly polluted 21st century where child-bearing has become illegal. To help ease the tension and stress caused by not procreating, married couples use robot dolls to substitute for children. One couple decides to break the law and have a real baby in secret. Unfortunately, their neighbors find out and demand that the couple share the baby with them. The other couple does so, but finds that the neighbors get too attached to the infant. They stop sharing their child, and the neighbors becomes so angry that they report them to authorities. Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2017

Heat (Remastered) BD - Incredibly cool characters pull off violent yet debonair crimes in the heart of a supermodern American city: yes, it's a Michael Mann film. The moving spirit behind "Miami Vice" has turned his attention to Los Angeles, where an anguished cop (Al Pacino) goes head-to-head with a troubled villain (Robert De Niro). The movie looks happiest at night, but the feline grace of the camera's moves is betrayed by the portentous script; Diane Venora, as the detective's wife, has some particularly gruesome lines to deliver. The film, which runs on and on for nearly three hours, yearns to be much more than a thriller-it wants to diagnose the sickness of men's souls and convey the nobility of their pain. The irony is that as a thriller it works just fine; the set pieces, including an unstoppable gun battle outside a bank, are adrenaline dreams. The taciturn De Niro and the braying Pacino share a flawless scene over a cup of coffee, but the real honors go to Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd as a warring, loving couple. Kilmer can blow you away, with or without a gun. 20th Century Fox (Remastered - Director's Definitive Edition) Blu-ray Release Date: February 22nd, 2017

The Handmaiden (Sony added) BD - The art of the tease is rarely as refined as in “The Handmaiden.” Set in Korea in the 1930s, this amusingly slippery entertainment is an erotic fantasy about an heiress, her sadistic uncle, her devoted maid and the rake who’s trying to pull off a devilishly elaborate con. The same could be said of the director Park Chan-wook, whose attention to voluptuous detail — to opulent brocades and silky robes, luscious peaches and creamy shoulders — turns each scene into an invitation to ooh, aah and mmm. This is a movie that tries to ravish your senses so thoroughly you may not notice its sleights of hand. Sony Blu-ray Release Date: March 28th, 2017

Venom BD - It was supposed to be the perfect crime: the sexy maid (Susan George), a psychotic chauffeur (Oliver Reed) and an international terrorist (the legendary Klaus Kinski) kidnap a wealthy ten-year-old boy from his elegant London townhouse. But they didn't count on a murdered cop, a desperate hostage siege, and one very unexpected houseguest: a furious Black Mamba, the most lethal and aggressive snake known to nature. It can attack from ten feet away. Its bite brings excruciating death. And it is on the loose. Now, terror knows no antidote... and the ultimate in slithering mayhem is VENOM. Blue Underground Re-Release Blu-ray Release Date: March 28th, 2017

The Bitch BD - Joan Collins stars as Fontaine Khaled in this sleek and sleazy sequel to her sister Jackie Collins's The Stud. Fontaine is the owner of a high class London nightclub, but after having an extramarital affair, her marriage falls apart and she stands to lose her nightclub. As a result, she hits the jet-set circuit, plying her allure for erotic dividends. She also involves herself in smuggling and in rigged horse races, trying any means necessary to obtain the funding to rescue her beloved nightclub from foreclosure. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2017

Witchtrap BD - For years, the Lauter House has been plagued by strange and violent occurrences. Unexplained deaths and seemingly supernatural activities have scared away all perspective tenants and buyers, but now its owners have decided to turn the old mansion into a bed and breakfast. Follow a team of paranormal experts as they attempt to remove the demonic forces and cleanse the property of all evil, through the use of a special device designed to lure in and trap evil spirits. But as soon as they arrive, the violence begins again as members of the team begin to meet increasingly bloody fates... Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2017

What's the Matter With Helen? BD - After their sons are convicted of homicide in a highly publicized trial, Midwesterners Adelle (Debbie Reynolds) and Helen (Shelley Winters) begin receiving threatening phone calls and decide to begin their lives anew in Hollywood, Calif. They open a dance school for young girls, and, while the business succeeds, their troubles continue. Helen becomes dangerously neurotic and increasingly clings to Adelle, who longs to marry the wealthy parent (Dennis Weaver) of one of her students. Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2017

Invisible Ghost BD - Dr. Charles Kessler (Bela Lugosi), a well-to-do physician who shares his mansion with his daughter, Virginia (Polly Ann Young), has been depressed ever since his wife (Betty Compson) left him for another man, only to later die in a car accident. That's not all Kessler has to worry about, however. Unexplained murders have begun to occur around town, eventually claiming members of his house staff. Making matters worse, the authorities suspect Kessler may somehow be involved. Blu-ray Release date: March 21st, 2017

The Valley of Gwangi BD - Promoter Tuck Kirby arrives in a small Mexican town to visit T. J. Breckenridge, his ex-partner and girl friend who now owns a financially troubled Wild West show. Tuck suggests that she sell the show and marry him, but T. J. boasts of a new attraction that promises to make her wealthy. She shows Tuck a miniature horse which she obtained from Carlos, a gypsy who defied native superstition by removing the creature from the nearby Forbidden Valley. Baffled, Tuck takes the tiny animal to British paleontologist Prof. Horace Bromley who claims that it belongs to a species believed to have been extinct for over 50 million years. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2017

Chamber of Horrors BD - A blood-and-thunder horror yarn from the pen of Edgar Wallace, The Door With Seven Locks stars Leslie Banks as a mass murderer with a penchant for puzzles. He lures several heirs to a fortune to their deaths in his mazelike mansion, which is festooned with cryptic clues leading to the location of a valuable treasure. Banks goes too far when he abducts the lovely Lilli Palmer, whose handsome boyfriend invades the mystery house, rescues the girl, and puts an end to Banks' perfidy. Door with Seven Locks was released in the US as Chamber of Horrors. Blu-ray Release date: March 21st, 2017

The Mad Miss Manton - Wealthy socialite Melsa Manton (Barbara Stanwyck) is taking her pooches for a walk in the dead of the night when she stumbles upon a dead body and a car fleeing the scene of the crime. She alerts the police but the corpse has disappeared by the time they arrive, and the lieutenant, knowing of her madcap reputation, believes she was playing a practical joke. After newspaper editor Peter Ames (Henry Fonda) takes her to task in print, she sues him for libel and enlists the aid of her society friends in tracking down the body and finding the killer. Eventually, Ames comes around to believing Melsa's story and aids her in her search. It isn't long before the two antagonists find they're attracted to each other -- but they have to catch the murderer before they can settle down and live happily ever after. DVD Release Date: July 21st, 2009
