We are talking about a minimum of $0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a quarter (or more) to those who won't miss it from their budget. It equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee once, twice or a few times a month. You can then participate in our monthly Silent auctions, and have exclusive access to many 'bonus' High Resolution screen captures - both 4K UHD and Blu-ray (see HERE).

directed by  Richard Brooks
USA 1958

Based on the play by Tennessee Williams: A party is planned for the 65th birthday of family patriarch 'Big Daddy', but not everyone is in a festive mood. Big Daddy's son Brick, a one-time star athlete, has a drinking problem and has become cold towards his wife Maggie, though she still desperately loves him. Brick's older brother Gooper and his wife hope to gain control over Big Daddy's estate. Big Daddy himself is just coming home from a clinic where he has been tested for cancer. When his doctor tells the family the results of the tests, the family's accumulated lies, frustrations, and secrets quickly begin to come out.

"I'm not living with you," Maggie snaps at Brick. "We occupy the same cage, that's all." The raw emotions and crackling dialogue of Tennessee Williams' 1955 Pulitzer Prize play rumble like a thunderstorm in this film version whose fiery performances and grown-up themes made it one of 1958's top box-office hits. Paul Newman earned his first Oscar nomination as troubled ex-sports hero Brick. In a performance that marked a transition to richer adult roles, Elizabeth Taylor snagged her second. Her Maggie the Cat is a vivid portrait of passionate loyalty. Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and also starring Burl Ives (repeating his Broadway triumph as mendacity-loathing Big Daddy), Judith Anderson and Jack Carson, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof sizzles.

Comments NOTE: Just thought you might like to know; we found a hilarious mistake on the "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" new Deluxe DVD: in the menu for language, the picture shown of Elizabeth Taylor is from Butterfield 8, made 2 years later. (Thanks DeeF)

We have quite a big variance between the two editions. The new release is much brighter with a kind of light pinkish-brown hue and the image is vertically stretched in comparison to the older release. The new ratio tends to look more accurate to my eye. There also appears to be some movement when transferring - but generally the most 'loss' is in the bottom of the frame in the new release with even less on the two sides. It is mostly very slight though. Colors and detail are far superior in the new release. By comparison the initial edition has moments of saturation and imbalance. In fact, as you might have expected, everything is better in the new edition. As well as the improved transfer the Deluxe edition has a commentary, by biographer Donald Spoto, filled with extraneous details on Tennessee Williams and his relationship to the screen version of his play. Also included are a trailer (same as the initial edition) and a 10 minute featurette. Include in this I can now rid myself of the old snapper case and Warner have once again proven their commitment to some of the great films of past Hollywood, offering them to us at extremely reasonable prices. Of course, we recommend!
