(aka "Women Against Women, a Tale of Sex and Violence" or "Jailbirds")

Directed by Giovanni Brusadori (as Conrad Brueghel)
Italy 1978

From legendary exploitation producer Dick Randall - whose credits include classics like THE WILD, WILD WORLD OF JAYNE MANSFIELD, THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE and PIECES - comes one of the most strangely depraved EuroSleaze sagas of the '70s.

When four hardened female convicts escape and take a women's tennis team hostage, they'll force the girls into a nightmare of lesbianism, Marxism and murder. Supermodel-turned-porn-queen Lilli Carati (Joe D'Amato's THE ALCOVE) and Zora Kerova (ANTHROPOPHAGUS, CANNIBAL FEROX) star in this politically charged filth-fest - also known as JAILBIRDS and WOMEN AGAINST WOMEN: A STORY OF SEX AND VIOLENCE - from writer/director 'Conrad Brueghel' (aka Italian actor Giovanni Brusadori of EMANUELLE, QUEEN OF THE DESERT), now featuring a new 4k scan of a dupe negative seized from notorious NYC distributor 21st Century Film Corp.

***

Four female convicts break out of prison, and during their escape they take hostage a bus full of young female tennis players. They drive the bus to the house of the judge who originally sent them to prison, where--since this is after all a women-in-prison picture--the hostages undergo various forms of physical and sexual abuse in various degrees of nudity.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Severin Films Blu-ray (May 2019): Severin Films have transferred "Escape from Women's Prison" to Blu-ray. It starts with the caveat "The element used for the scan of ESCAPE FROM WOMEN'S PRISON is a dupe negative and the best known element of the US release version. " Advertised as "For the first time ever in HD, plus the extended Italian Version!" The below screen captures can tell you what you need to know about the image quality. The English version is in 1080P and fraught with damage (see last capture) and scratches. It has heavy grain but colors carry some richness. The Italian version is progressive but in 720 resolution - it is significantly hazier and has a brown-leaning (to the English version's blue-ish-infusion.) Now, while watchable, these are, by no means from acceptable sources - it's a film that requires, but will never get, a restoration. Grain lovers may appreciate the English versions saturation of texture.

On their Blu-ray, Severin Films use a DTS-HD Master (16-bit) 2.0 channel mono in the English DUB and a lossy Dolby for the Italian-language version. It's about the level of the video - maybe worse in some spots but there are optional English subtitles for both versions. The score is credited to Italian composer Pippo Caruso. The Severin is a Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Severin Films Blu-ray, as well as having the Italian cut "Le Evase", there is a 1/2 hour interview with Director Giovanni Brusadori entitled Freedom, Sex & Violence that broaches the topic of censorship and how far his exploitation flic was willing to go in 1978. There is also a trailer for the film in equally poor condition.

Okay - not much 'prison' stuff in "Escape from Women's Prison"... there are some bars separating a room in the basement of the house though. It has constant Left-wing political overtones about healthy Socialism and castigating the 'Bourgeoisie", angry women seeking revenge against society - and some less-erotic nudity, lesbianism and forced sex. Not much more that I can say more than the Blu-ray captures can tell you. For those who have nostalgia and can appreciate this sexploitive 'Women in Prison' genre, there is some value - just be aware of the a/v quality and lack of typical prison conventions like evil Nazi-esque Wardens etc...
