(aka 'The Village" or 'Harakara')
directed by Yôji
Yamada
Japan 1975
Perhaps not as strong as some of Yamada's other efforts, this is
still an excellent film. A quasi-docu-drama pertaining to the monumental process to bring
a performance troupe to a small Japanese village to perform for one night.
Characters are kept on a very surface level showing both their small-town
innocence (most are simple farmers) and so as not to distract from the main
event - the upcoming performance. We see glimpses of human drama in the events
portrayed by the troupe, but the real crux of the film is the passionate youth
group who apprehensively agree to accept the performance and than give their all
to ensure it is eventually shown in their village - the most minute ray of
culture that their town may ever have.

Panorama for all their faults are at least bringing some wonderful Japanese classics to a western (and Chinese) market. The DVD is typically of below current standards, even for Panorama, - non-progressive (lots of bad combing) and non-anamorphic at around 1.95 when I suspect it should be at 2.35. Best suited for tube viewing with dull colors and artifacts but the subtitles are generally acceptable with a few absentee spots. The recommendation is all for the film - a docudrama exploring the passion behind performance art productions. |
