(aka "Home From the Sea")

directed by Yoji Yamada
Japan 1972

Lovely, straightforward, simple film from the Tora-san director YOJI  YAMADA about a couple struggling to make a living by transporting rocks in an old boat on its last legs. The beautifully observed story set in and around Seto Inner Sea sees them having to decide whether to repair their boat or give up altogether and move to Onomichi for more modern, industrialized work. From the back of the box, "They have the deepest affection for the piece of land they are attached to and enjoy their simple life there. Rapid industrial development, however, makes it impossible for them to carry on with such a lifestyle. The story extols people's fondness for their native land and at the same time reflects the cruel social reality of 1970s Japan."  There is a wonderful amount of early 70s Japan in this film, the cars, the sounds, the buildings - and Yamada successfully conveys the tangible sadness of the main characters' plight. The great Ozu regular Chishu Ryu has a large role as the grandfather.

Comments: This is the best print I've seen Panorama use in their "100 Years Of Japanese Cinema" series (I've seen about 10 so far), however the transfer of the print is non-anamorphic and looks tape-sourced. I noticed some combing in forced weave mode of my computer DVD player. The film is framed at roughly 1.78:1 and the box explains that the film is being displayed in widescreen "in the original aspect ratio that the film was shown theatrically". However, during the end titles, the AR zooms from 1.78:1 to 2.35:1 which makes me wonder if the AR is actually 2.35:1. Framing looked "slightly tight", but there was no panning and scanning, and it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the film. A lovely little film (released on DVD by Panorama at the same time as Yamada's THE VILLAGE (1975)). These films are lucky to get a DVD release. Gobble them up!
