(aka "Pleasure Party" or "A Piece of Pleasure")
This is one of Claude Chabrol's most unpleasant films, but it can't be denied that it's also one of his most fascinating and provocative. It was written by his longtime collaborator, the late Paul Gegauff, who stars with his own ex-wife Daniele Gegauff, and the subject is the brutal breakup of their apparently idyllic marriage. Things start to crumble when the chauvinistic and unbalanced Gegauff perversely suggests that his wife consider taking on a lover, and then becomes increasingly abusive when she follows his suggestion. As often happens in Chabrol films, it is their child (played by their actual daughter, Clemence Gegauff) who winds up bearing, mainly silently, the brunt of the ensuing carnage. You may be enraged by this film, and you won't find it easy to shake off; the self-exposure of the leads and Chabrol's unswerving control of the direction combine to make it corrosive. Comments | I
disappointed that these two great French directors, Claude Chabrol and
Eric Rohmer have so many wonderful films, yet are not represented at all
in Criterion collection! Pleasure Party have the same standard as the other Chabrol films released by Pathfinder. The quality in this one is in the middle, also as a film. Not as good as their DVD of Les Bitches, but not as bad as the worst from them. I can fully watch with a projector films made from an analog PAL master, with dirt and scratches and faded colors, but I dislike the Digital restoring program that Pathfinder has used on their Chabrol films. Everything appears to be shaking and jumping. Every movement draws unnatural contours on the picture, when the program tries to sharpen things that are soft. Well, I don't think we will get another DVD of this title, so maybe one should be happy that it's even available. On the better side is a huge amount of extras, that alone may be enough to purchase this disc. |
