(aka "Heimat - A Chronicle of Germany" )

directed by Edgar Reitz
Germany 1984

Five years in the making, Heimat is one of the most compelling and highly praised dramas in television history. This epic tale of a family and their rural life in a small German village is told against the changing backdrop of a country's turbulent history from 1919 to 1982. From the aftermath of the First World War, economic hardship, the rise and fall of Nazism, the Second World War and the decades that followed, life in the village goes on and the values and aspirations of the people at its' heart are wonderfully brought to life in this gripping saga of an ordinary family living through extraordinary times.

...but nothing ever expressed, to me, so deeply, the soul and feelings of a people. I was stuck in front of the screen for weeks. Didn't miss a minute. When it started I didn't know what it was going to be like. I didn't expect nothing, I didn't know what I was going to see. I don't even watch TV. It was turned on, just like that. Heimat appeared... it's been maybe 12 years now, since I saw Heimat, and I never imagined it would remain so deep in my memory. Or should I say in my soul? I always thought that such memories and feelings could only stay with us from real life experiences...

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Second Sight - Region 'B' Blu-ray March 2018':  Second Sight Films are bringing Heimat to Blu-ray. Let's take a deep breath. WOW. Firstly, Ron Janik did a thorough review of the Tartan DVD set HERE.

We've compared only from the first episode below including the unwatchable Facets DVD from 2005.

The 1080i (maintaining the original TV broadcast representation) looks excellent. It is in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio - less on top and bottom - a shade more on the side edges. It is advertised as "Restored from the original negative by The Edgar Reitz Film Foundation". The shifting from black and white with layered contrast to colors is seamless with the bleeding or the chroma evident on the Tartan SD. I am still going through the episodes but the quality level is consistent. The 11 segments are housed on five dual-layered Blu-ray discs with a sixth representing the supplements.

Audio is transferred via a linear PCM 2.0 channel in the original German (16-bit) - again a significant advance upon the lossy DVDs. The series music is by Nikos Mamangakis (Heimat 2: Chronicle of a Generation) and I often found it a subtle but effecting part of the presentation - wonderfully matched the HD visuals. The subtitles are not burned-in - but I do find them non-removable even with the menu. The Blu-ray disc is Region 'B'-locked.

Second Sight include many extras all on the 6th Blu-ray. 'Heimat – The Hunsruek Villages: Stories From The Film Locations' runs 1 hour 53-minutes and is Edgar Reitz's documentary 'prologue' to Heimat. It is very interesting as a chronicle of the countryside, villages etc. locales in Heimat. I appreciated the 40-minute interview with Edgar Reitz on the making of Heimat. Maria's Story spends 11-minutes with Marita Breuer (Maria Simon) on Heimat and her recollections on the production. Those keen on the quality will appreciate the 18-minute video piece of Christian Reitz on restoring Heimat and the hurdles they faced. He is known for his work on Home from Home: Chronicle of a Vision (2013) and is the son of director Edgar Reitz. Showing Not Talking: Jan Harlan on Heimat. Harlan is a German-American executive producer of A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining + Barry Lyndon and the brother of Christiane Kubrick, director Stanley Kubrick's widow. We get a dozen-minute visual essay by Daniel Bird which injects quotation overlays into scenes from the film. I haven't seen it but thee is a 50 page limited edition soft cover book featuring liner notes by Carmen Gray, 'The Collaboration with Gernot Roll' by Edgar Reitz and 'Germany as Memory' by Anton Kaes.

If you haven't seen this over 15-hour masterwork - it is mandatory viewing and the Blu-ray package is, by far, the best way to enjoy this incredible work in your home theater. The extras are great and I can't wait to get the book. This easily has our very highest recommendation.

ON THE TARTAN DVD (2004): Exceptional packaging (see image below) on this monumental set often described as 'one of Stanley Kubrick's favorites'. Some real effort was put into this powerful 11 episode series that tells the story of the village Schabbach, on the Hunsrueck in Germany through the years 1919-1982.

Release features:
Book "Heimat An Introduction" by David Parkinson

6 Discs with 11 Episodes:

Disc 1 (120')
Episode 1 "The Call of Faraway Places (1919-1928)" (119'18")
Disc 2 (148')
Episode 2 "The Centre of the World (1929-1933)" (89'37")
Episode 3 "The Best Christmas Ever (1935)" (57'50")
Disc 3 (176')

Episode 4 "The Highway (1938)" (58'19")
Episode 5 "Up and Away and Back (1938-1939)" (58'36")
Episode 6 "The Home Front" (1943)" (58'37")
Disc 4 (161')
Episode 7 "Soldiers and Love (1944)" (58'36")
Episode 8 " The American (1945-1947)" (102'02")
Disc 5 (139')
Episode 9 "Little Herman" (1955-1956)" (138'25")
Disc 6 (183')
Episode 10 "The Front Years (1967-1969)" (82'08")
Episode 11 "The Feast of the Living and the Dead (1982)" (100'23")

Some episodes seem to be softer and grainier than other, over all they are quite acceptable. Black and white sequences tend to be much crisper with nice rendition of blacks. Occasional dithering and artifacts are occasionally present but within an acceptable level. Audio is also up to par and subtitles appear to be well translated.

Note: Manu on Disc 6 has wrongly titled Episode # 10 as "The Proud Years" instead of "The Front Years".

ON THE FACETS (2005): This review has only one purpose and that is to get you to avoid the upcoming Facets "Heimat" as the quality is far below even their lapse standards. Claiming that it is based on an 1980s analogue beta cam (1 inch) NTSC master, you can plainly see in comparison to the existing Tartan edition fully reviewed HERE that the Facets image is totally unacceptable. We strongly suggest that you ignore buying this release or cancel any pre-order you may have made and consider the Tartan edition available from Amazon.UK HERE for RENT HERE.
