Schabbach is now connected to the telephone network. But Lucie is far from content with the pace of her husband's progress. Consequently, she ingratiates herself with the district's new Gauleiter, who not only shares Eduard's surname, but also his interest in photography. Exploiting their new Party connections, the couple moves to the neighbouring village of Rhaunen, where Eduard becomes mayor and Lucie commissions a luxurious villa - paid for a loan from a Jewish bank in Mainz...
