Record of a Tenement Gentleman Flavor of Green Tea over Rice

Regarded by critics and filmmakers alike as one of the world’s greatest directors, Yasujiro Ozu has been praised for his deliberate and striking visual style. After his directorial debut in 1927, he went on to direct 55 films before his death from cancer in 1963. Largely unappreciated during his lifetime, it is only relatively recently that Ozu has come to be considered as one the best filmmakers that the world has ever seen.

Made just two years prior to the first film in Ozu’s ‘Noriko Trilogy’, Record of a Tenement Gentleman (1947) is an irresistible and touching tale of a young boy abandoned to poverty by his father, and the subsequent relationship that he has with Tane, a local widow who is begrudgingly given the task of looking after the boy. Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (1952) was made the year before Ozu’s acknowledged masterpiece Tokyo Story and is a delicately observed tale of
rekindled love which follows a couple who, bored with their existence in an arranged marriage, set about livening up their life together.

This second volume of key works from Japan’s greatest director is mastered from the best available source materials and includes an insightful audio commentary for Record of a Tenement Gentleman by leading UK film critic Derek Malcolm.

In "Record of a Tenement Gentleman", Ozu yet again presents a deceptively simple story in the manner typical of the most powerful of his films. The seeming sentimentality of a lost child slowly warming a hardhearted woman is deflected by the child's grubbiness and stoicism, the lack of any cute exchanges, and Ozu's well-known avoidance of close-ups or scenes of emotional outpouring. Critics and reviewers who describe the film as a light comedy are correct, but only on one level. Ozu's treatment of his scenario is so unobtrusively deft we may not see at first how deeply the effects of World War II are impressed upon every shot, setting, and character of the film. When we do, Record of a Tenement Gentleman becomes less a singular story about the unlocking of an elderly woman's heart than a populist Japanese postwar blues delivered in that comic and bittersweet lyric style that is distinctly Ozu's.

A PAL-ified NTSC port from the Shochiku restored version, there are combing and ghosting issues, but also problems with the "restoration" itself.

It is not a frame by frame restored transfer. There are signs of scratches and damage, the light both flickers and fades at times, and sharpness varies from sharp in details to unfocussed. But it looks quiet good, having been cleaned. Details are good, even though a bit soft, and blacks are solid.

Likewise about the sound. While it is clear, there are audible noise and scratches. This is not restored sound, merely noise reduction.

The additional material is a photo gallery, a restoration demonstration, where one can via split screen, can see the improvements, and an audio commentary by Derek Malcolm.

The audio commentary is very disappointing. Not only does Malcolm keep very long pauses, but when he talks, he either comments what happens in the film, comments why the actors does what, or comes with common knowledge about Ozu, which most detailed biographies would tell you. For instance, when briefly mentioning the technical aspects of Ozu's mise-en-scene, Malcolm merely says, "...almost all Ozu films looks complete artless and he doesn't use many techniques. The camera just looks straight at the scene."

NOTE: I added two comparison captures from the Panorama Region 3- NTSC edition. I think the Tartan has the edge, certainly in contrast (Panorama has a sepia tinge), but the most obvious failing of the Hong Kong disc are the weakly translated subtitles.

The source appears to have been in a better condition than "Record of a Tenement Gentleman". There are no signs of scratches or damage, but the light still flickers and fades from time to time.

The image itself looks great. Details are good, even though at times a bit soft, blacks are solid and there are no signs of edge enhancement. The only artifact appears to be minute chroma noise.

The sound is likewise good. Still not a restored sound, but merely noise reduced, leaving a minute hissing sound throughout the track. Dialogue is clear.

Sadly, the only additional material is a restoration demonstration and photo gallery.
