We are talking about a minimum of $0.10 - $0.15 a day, perhaps a quarter (or more) to those who won't miss it from their budget. It equates to buying DVDBeaver a coffee once, twice or a few times a month. You can then participate in our monthly Silent auctions, and have exclusive access to many 'bonus' High Resolution screen captures - both 4K UHD and Blu-ray (see HERE).

(aka 'Perils from the Planet Mongo" or "Purple Death from Outer Space" or "Space Soldiers Conquer the Universe')

directed by Ford Beebe and Ray Taylor
USA 1940

I feel like I shouldn't have to sell anyone on how great this serial was. For me even years beyond there initial release, seeing them each Saturday morning as a youth was formative for my ideals on science-fiction and boyhood adventure. I was hooked. There really is nothing like it as even Buck Rogers could not attain the heights of serial improbability and innocence of production that Flash Gordon did. In these 12 chapters a mysterious plague known as The Purple Death, is spreading its destruction over a helpless earth. Dr. Zarkov, investigating in his spaceship, finds that an alien ship based on planet Mongo is seeding the human atmosphere with a strange dust. Ming the Merciless is behind the nefarious doings. Flash, Dale, and Zarkov head to Mongo to save the earth by ceasing, and hopefully finding an antidote to, the plague. On their side are Prince Barin of Arboria and Queen Fria of the frozen northern land of Frigia. The battle is on, take your corners please.

Easily one of the best serials of all time.

This is another one of those crazy situations where the hard-to-find individual relases are significantly more expense than just buying the Boxset. You get Flash Gordon: Space Soldiers/Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe all in one set.  They are the exact same image quality as the individual releases but you can get all 3 for only $5 more than just one single edition. A great deal...

Comments:

Nirvana is watching this serial late on Friday nights, potato chips and a beer beside me. Flash and his friends defy the odds time and again battling evil wherever in the universe that it dwells. I think buying the 3 edition Boxset (over the individuals) is a real no-brainer. We are only talking over 10 hours of entertainment for the three editions.

Picture quality on these prints from Image Entertainment are not bad at all. They used Hearst Entertainment's original elements, although a number of inferior public domains transfers are in existence on other DVD labels. Contrast shifts from chapter to chapter from a lightened dusty image with some sepia to one of deep penetrating blacks. Sharpness is not bad and I couldn't find "combing" meaning it may actually be HD-sourced. It has a degree of sharpness with occasional film grain showing. I love it. Anyway taking into consideration the age - it is very good. Audio is original mono. There are no subtitles unfortunately and no extras (but it is almost 4 hours long on one dual layered disc filling 7.4 Gig). This is one of the reasons that I most love the DVD medium to own this and indulge at will. out of
