directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz
USA 1946

Based upon the bestselling novel “Dragonwyck” by Anya Seton, this is Joseph L. Mankiewicz’ directorial debut.

It tells the story of the naïve farm girl Miranda (Gene Tierney). When she gets an invitation from a distant cousin, Nicholas Van Ryn (Vincent Price), to stay at his mansion. After much persuasion, she talks her father into letting her leave and thus she leaves her very religious family to live a life with the terribly rich and elegant.

But life at Dragonwyck is not quiet what she expected. Van Ryn is cold and tyrannical, and both his wife and daughters starve for affection. When his wife dies, he asks for the hand of Miranda, but she declines and returns home. However Van Ryn is set to marry Miranda, and after a few months he pays the family a visit and asks for her hand once more.

Returning to Dragonwyck, his kindness towards her soon turns into cold. Not only does their newborn son die, but a new law also allows the tenants to buy their land, which leaves Van Ryn without income. Soon Miranda falls ill, and her doctor suspects her of being poisoned, the same way Van Ryn poisoned his former wife. When Van Ryn is confronted, he reveals himself as mad and is shot. The doctor accompanies Miranda to her home.

Originally to be directed by Ernest Lubitsch, he fell ill and Mankiewicz, who wrote the adaptation, was offered the directors chair. From a production point of view, a very safe first film. The book was a bestseller and the chemistry between Gene Tierney and Vincent Price had already been proven solid twice before in “Laura” by Otto Preminger in 1944 and in “Leave her to Heaven” by John Stahl in 1945, for which Tierney got an Oscar nomination.

It is not really a Mankiewicz, or for that matter a Lubitsch, type of film, being a somewhat ordinary gothic romantic drama, but Mankiewicz takes full advantage of his leading actors, even though one can argue, that Tierney perhaps is miscast, even though she plays her naivety brilliantly. On the other hand, Price is superb as the mad Dutch aristocrat, who hates his wife for not giving him a son, and blames Miranda for the death of his newborn son.

The result is a haunting classic gothic tale and a must-see for all lovers of Tierney, Price and Mankiewicz. Highly recommended.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

Indicator present "Dragonwyck" on a dual-layered Blu-ray featuring two presentations of the film: the 2017 4K restoration, and the legacy High Definition remaster. The 2017 4k restoration is identical to what appeared on the previous Twilight Time Blu-ray. The legacy HD remaster has more coarse textures and richer, deeper black levels - I tend to like it although it is not as smooth as the 4K-restored. It's nice to have the option of this alt-source which is a technical duplicate in terms of bitrate. The versions are accessible from the main menu, or by using your remote's 'Angle' button.

The film is presented in its original 24-bit 1.0 linear PCM mono. This is a nice slight improvement over Twilight Time's DTS-HD Master audio track, though only truly discerning ears would be able to notice, and only if toggling between the two (as I did). The Alfred Newman (Panic in the Streets, Man Hunt, Cry of the City, The Diary of Anne Frank, Bus Stop, Blood and Sand, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Song of Bernadette) score is also available as an isolated option. There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region 'B'-locked Blu-ray (as verified by our player).

Indicator have added a few new extras, while also keeping some that previously appeared on the Twilight Time disc. These duplicate extras are; the audio commentary with Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr, the isolated music and effects track, "A House of Secrets: Exploring ‘Dragonwyck’" featurette, the two radio plays (1946 Lux Radio Theatre and the 1947 Screen Guild Theater presentations), the original theatrical trailer. What Indicator have added here is well worth your time, starting with the 76-minute 1969 John Player Lecture with Vincent Price, an archival audio recording of the celebrated actor in conversation at London’s National Film Theatre. Also new here is an image gallery full of interesting publicity material and a limited edition exclusive 36-page booklet with a new essay by Neil Sinyard, an overview of the film’s 'Production Code' history, Gene Tierney interview extracts, an overview of contemporary critical responses, and film credits.

Dragonwyck is an excellent film in the classic Gothic style. Vincent Price and Gene Tierney are as magnetic as one would imagine. Indicator's two sources used provide discerning viewers with a unique option although many may prefer the 4k restoration - I also see value in the Legacy transfer as well. Recommended to fans of classic cinema.

ADDITION: Twilight Time - Region 'A' Blu-ray February 2018': Twilight Time's new Blu-ray shows the film's grain to a higher level. It looks superior to the SD, especially in-motion. It is thick and film-like - a shade flat but no doubt far closer to the original presentation.

Twilight Time use a DTS-HD Master (24-bit) in the original English language and it strongly benefits the score is by Alfred Newman (Panic in the Streets, Man Hunt, Cry of the City, The Diary of Anne Frank, Bus Stop, Blood and Sand, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Song of Bernadette) score which is also available as an isolated option. There are optional English subtitles and the Blu-ray disc is Region FREE - limited to 3,000 copies.

Twilight Time include extras from the 2008 DVD including the audio commentary with film historian Steve Haberman and documentary filmmaker Constantine Nasr, 1/4 hour A House of Secrets: Exploring Dragonwyck featurette and the two Dragonwyck Vintage Radio Shows. Plus they add AE Biography episodes Gene Tierney: A Shattered Portrait and Vincent Price: The Versatile Villain both running 3/4 of an hour and there is an original theatrical trailer as well as some liner notes by Julie Kirgo.

Excellent film - Gothic thriller and mystery... Tierney and Price are great - loved the Newman score. I thoroughly enjoyed my viewing and can recommend to those keen on vintage era gems. Absolutely recommended!

***

ADDITION: Fox Horror Classics Vol. 2 - August 08' - Short story is that the Fox dual-layered NTSC issue is marginally sharper with better black levels. Effectively it blows away the other releases in supplements with the commentary, featurette etc. and the price is ridiculously low considering you get three films with solid extras (2 with commentary). It also has subtitles. We've reviewed the entire boxset HERE and we strongly recommend it!

***

ADDITION: Carlotta Films - PAL - Dec 05' - Image quality appears equal. Although the majority of the Carlotta extras are in French (including the commentary), the 51 minute Mankiewicz interview is in English with optional French subs. It seems like a decent boxset for the three Mankiewicz titles, but for frugality - the Optimum is the way to go fore this film.

***

The image lacks sharpness in details, especially in long shots, there are occasional edge enhancements and colour banding, but overall a decent image, especially considering this to be a DVD-5 release. Blacks are solid and the darker the scenes, the better the image.

Sound is 2.0 Dolby Digital and is clear without any noise.

As a discount release from Optimum, it lacks any extras and subtitles. But considering how rare this film is, it is a most welcomed release.
