ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Criterion's massive 27-disc Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman package is an easy placement for top spot. Many haven't had the pleasure of being introduced to our blind-masseur-samurai protagonist and few have seen all 25 of the film in this collection. The 1080P is a giant leap forward from the past digital representations. The Blu-rays are worth holding onto and enjoying for a lifetime. Whew. After that even second spot seems obvious - Robert Altman's Nashville looks so incredibly advanced beyond the previous DVD via Criterion's new Blu-ray. Pure pleasure. Masters of Cinema give us Howard Hawk's (and Arthur Rosson) Red River on rich Blu-ray - a dynamic western - debatably the Duke's best. Elio Petri's Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion - a complex crime-drama from Italy with an irresistible style looking very film-like on Criterion Blu-ray. A first from DVDBeaver - but not our last of this new music format - we endorse Getz/Gilberto BD Audio as the best this classic bossa-nova album can sound on your system, Beautiful. Fans of vintage cinema will appreciate The Vivien Leigh Anniversary Collection - four wonderful early films with this magnetic actress. I only hope there are more coming. Pacino as Serpico is one of the actor's greatest portrayals - and finally Paramount offer it in Region 'A' Blu-ray for a very reasonable price. I don't think I'm alone on enjoying Night of the Comet - the apocalypse meets Valley Girls - for a lot of fun! Drifters of the Dead isn't even worth talking about - pass. On DVD we have quite a lot with Gregory augmenting his extensive vintage film reviews with a racy pre-code entitled Hold Your Man and more with Gable and Harlow in Red Dust. All 138 episodes can now be indulged upon in Naked City - The Complete Series with shades of Noir and endless pre-star performances. Tough guys and tougher dames in A Dangerous Profession - a cop drama, Black Hand with a young Gene Kelly and I added the good news that we now have the ultra-essential Noir, Cry of the City, in NTSC (theatrical running time), glory - bravo! Eric covered La Bouche de Jean Pierre a 50-minute French drama about a child - from the impressive Lucile Hadzihalilovic. Out in the Dark - a highly lauded gay romance.. Those in charge of delaying Canada's winter - I thank you!

Night of the Comet BD - It’s the first comet to buzz the planet in 65 million years, and everyone seems to be celebrating its imminent arrival. Everyone, that is, except Regina Belmont (Catherine Mary Stewart, The Last Starfighter) and her younger sister Samantha (Kelli Maroney, Chopping Mall), two Valley Girls who care more about fashion trends than the celestial phenomenon. But upon daybreak, when the girls discover that they’re the only residents of Los Angeles whom the comet hasn’t vaporized or turned into a zombie, they do what all good Valley Girls do...they go shopping! But when their day of malling threatens to become a day of mauling, these gals flee with killer zombies and blood-seeking scientists in hot pursuit! Blu-ray Release date: November 19th, 2013

Drifters of the Dead BD - When an unplanned stop on a deserted island gives Takashi, Saeko and the rest of the ragged band of survivors a chance to expose themselves to something other than zombie bites for a change, they're more than ready to take a break and let their hair down. Discovering the remnants of an old beach store, the entire group strips to swimsuits and sets out to make the uninhabited island inhabitable, but they're unaware that this seeming paradise is actually just the dead calm before the storm. Because sometimes the recently deceased aren't the only problems that can lie buried in the sand, and as the swimwear comes off and the inhibitions come down, a kink in the island's food chain sets a truly shocking series of events into motion! Blu-ray Release date: November 26th, 2013

Getz/Gilberto BD Audio - The album Getz/Gilberto, recorded in 1963, with American saxophonist Stan Getz, Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto and his wife, Astrud Gilberto (vocals), performing Antônio "Tom" Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim's songs (Brazilian songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist) was originally released in March of 1964. The track "The Girl from Ipanema" is one of the most recorded songs of all time (latin, jazz or otherwise) and a defining standard in the Bossa-Nova movement along with Doralice, Desafinado, Corcovado and So Dance Samba - all found on this Blu-ray audio album. Blu-ray Audio Release date: October 13th, 2013

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman BD - The colossally popular Zatoichi films make up the longest-running action series in Japanese history and created one of the screen’s great heroes: an itinerant blind masseur who also happens to be a lightning-fast swordsman. As this iconic figure, the charismatic and earthy Shintaro Katsu became an instant superstar, lending a larger-than-life presence to the thrilling adventures of a man who lives staunchly by a code of honor and delivers justice in every town and village he enters. The films that feature him are variously pulse-pounding, hilarious, stirring, and completely off-the-wall. This deluxe set features the string of twenty-five Zatoichi films made between 1962 and 1973, collected in one package for the first time. Blu-ray Release date: November 26th, 2013

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion BD - The provocative Italian filmmaker Elio Petri’s most internationally acclaimed work is this remarkable, visceral, Oscar-winning thriller. Petri maintains a tricky balance between absurdity and realism in telling the Kafkaesque tale of a Roman police inspector (a commanding Gian Maria Volonté) investigating a heinous crime—which he himself committed. Both a compelling character study and a disturbing commentary on the draconian government crackdowns in Italy in the late 1960s and early ’70s, Petri’s kinetic portrait of surreal bureaucracy is a perversely pleasurable rendering of controlled chaos. Blu-ray Release Date: December 3rd, 2013

Nashville BD - The funniest epic vision of America ever to reach the screen. Robert Altman's movie is at once a GRAND HOTEL-style narrative, with 24 linked characters; a country-and-Western musical; a documentary essay on Nashville and American life; a meditation on the love affair between performers and audiences; and an Altman party. In the opening sequences, when Altman's people-the performers we associate with him because he has used them in ways no one else would think of, and they've been filtered through his sensibility-start arriving, and pile up in a traffic jam on the way from the airport to the city, the movie suggests the circus procession at the non-ending of 81. But Altman's clowns are far more autonomous; they move and intermingle freely, and the whole movie is their procession. The basic script is by Joan Tewkesbury, but the actors have been encouraged to work up material for their roles, and not only do they do their own singing but most of them wrote their own songs-and wrote them in character. The songs distill the singers' lives, as the pantomimes and theatrical performances did for the actors in CHILDREN OF PARADISE. Blu-ray Release Date: December 3rd, 2013

Blu-ray Release date: November 19th, 2013

Serpico BD - Serpico was one of those fortunate circumstances in filmmaking where a compelling true story hit home with the mood of the country and the times. It all came together with an enthusiastic producer seeking to make his mark in the industry, an emerging young actor at the height of his talents backed by a strong supporting cast, and an experienced director with a feel for authentic locations and a sure hand at guiding performers to their best performance. Blu-ray Release Date: December 3rd, 2013

Red River BD - Despite its inherent flaw an easy case could be made for touting this as the greatest western of all time. Very easy. The mark of the 'western' genre is, for the most part, the history of pioneering the American old west. Strong, fearless men venturing to find a place of opportunity in which to settle. This epic tale focuses on failed leadership by Tom Dunson (John Wayne), on the first cattle drive down the Chisholm Trail. A man with single-minded desire for success and to make his make his mark in the expansive land in Texas. Filled with many subtle classic western-isms involving legendary gun handling, fighting Indians, forsaking women for future gains, growing beef for the good of the country and sticking to an honorable code. The flaw, as most know, is the ending - but being aware of it allows one to forget its existence and enjoy a true branding of Americana with some exquisite cinematography. This is beyond a gem folks, this is a grand piece of cinema history that rightfully deserves it place topping some for the best westerns of all time. A masterpiece of masterpieces. Blu-ray Release Date: October 28th, 2013

Out in the Dark - Out in the Dark is as much of a political and societal commentary as it is an original romantic story. Compelling and intimate, Michael Mayer's taut first feature follows a border-crossing relationship between an Israeli lawyer and an increasingly desperate Palestinian student. Nimer, an ambitious Palestinian student in the West Bank, dreams of a better life abroad. One fateful night in Tel Aviv, he meets Roy, an Israeli lawyer, and the two fall in love. As their relationship deepens, they are both confronted with the harsh realities of a Palestinian society that refuses to accept Nimer for his sexual identity, and an Israeli society that rejects him for his nationality. When Nimer s close friend is caught hiding illegally in Tel Aviv and sent back to the West Bank, where he is brutally murdered, Nimer is forced to choose between the life he thought he wanted and his love for Roy. DVD Release Date: November 5th, 2013

 

La Bouche de Jean Pierre - The literal translation of the decidedly squirmy black comedy's French title. La Bouche de Jean-Pierre is "Jean-Pierre's Mouth," a reference made quite clear. The weirdness begins when young Mimi's mother attempts to kill herself. While her mother recovers in the hospital, she is sent to stay with her elderly, never-married Aunt Solange, who offers her a curtained corner in her tiny apartment. Much to Mimi's surprise Auntie Solange is a spinster but she is no desiccated prude, something the girl discovers when Solange's young, buff lover comes to call. Unfortunately, Jean-Pierre also finds himself shamefully attracted to the tender young niece. DVD Release Date: March 11th, 2013

Hold Your Man - Made in 1933, Hold Your Man is a fascinating mix of racy pre-Code cynicism and post-Code sentimentality and piety. Split right down the middle of its running time, the film’s first part resembles less a glossy MGM film and more a proletarian or underworld Warner Bros. product of the time, while the second half looks forward to the overt moralizing tendencies apparent in MGM’s films after mid-1934, when studio head Louis B. Mayer insisted that his studio give audiences reassuring Christian moral and spiritual uplift. In retrospect, Hold Your Man embodies Depression-era Hollywood’s contradictory impulses to obey pressures mounting from organized groups like the Catholic National Legion of Decency, as well as fulfill popular demand for more sexy and gritty fare in order to maintain corporate profitability in a depressed market. Hold Your Man had its cake and ate it too. DVD Release Date: October 16th, 2012

Red Dust - Three days up the river from Saigon sits a rubber plantation that’s barely above water. Managed by Denny (Gable), he works his coolies to the bone in a desperate attempt to keep his head above water. Denny’s spent practically his whole life on the plantation, so isn’t very used to it when a woman shows up looking for a place to stay. DVD Release Date: October 16th, 2013

Cry of the City - Riveting example of Siodmak's skill not only in transforming indifferent material, but in giving the feel of studio noir to location shooting. The familiar '30s theme (cop and criminal sharing the same deprived background in New York's Little Italy) acquires an almost metaphysical ring in being displaced by what turns into a literal cry of the city as the wounded gangster (Conte, terrific) goes on the run for the last few hours of his life, leaving behind him a dark trail of murder, pain and betrayal. DVD Release Date: October 8th, 2013

Black Hand - Eight years after the murder of his father, an Italian immigrant, for daring to oppose the criminal organization called The Black Hand (the script also calls it The Mafia and The Comorra), young Gene Kelly returns to New York to pursue his vendetta. With the help of police detective J. Carrol Naish, he tries to organize the tenement neighborhood to resist the reign of intimidation and terror. But the mob has moles who anticipate and thwart his every move. When Naish travels to Naples on the case, he's killed, but not before mailing an envelope of incriminating photos to Kelly. But the little brother of Kelly's girlfriend (Teresa Celli) is kidnapped, with the envelope serving as ransom.... DVD Release Date: July 17th, 2012

A Dangerous Profession - Vince Kane has an affinity for dangerous professions. Once he was a cop. Now he’s making a lot more dough but facing just as much trouble as a bail bondsman. His latest client, charged with securities robbery, can’t make his $25,000 bail. The client’s seductive wife comes up with four grand, a mysterious lawyer adds twelve more, and Vince makes up the difference. Why? The wife was once Vince’s girl – and he still carries a torch that’s sure to burn him. Film tough-guy George Raft stars as Vince in a pared-to-the-sinews noir that follows deceit, desire and greed to their violent ends. Ella Raines is appropriately smoldering as Vince’s former love, Pat O’Brien plays is canny partner, and Jim Backus defends the thin blue line as an honest cop. Ted Tetzlaff directs, rounding out a year that also included his acclaimed thriller The Window. DVD Release Date: April 23rd, 2013
