ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Carl Th. Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc has such an incredible history and it is wonderful to have the film in a 1080P restoration thanks to BFI. It is encouraging to see that the Kino Blu-ray package of Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen is comparable to and impressive as the Masters of Cinema release. Long Day's Journey Into Night looks great on Blu-ray from Olive Films. Jean-Luc Godard's Weekend gets the Criterion-treatment and hence, becomes, a digital essential. The Universal HD transfer of Hitchcock's Rope adds another reason to indulge in the Masterpiece Collection. Greed in the Sun is a cool French action-adventure comedy from the 60's and the image quality is sweet on Blu-ray - thumbs skyward. I had a great time viewing the latest Spidey adventure - The Amazing Spider-man is a re-telling of the origin and looks and sounds pristine on Blu-ray. Taxi for Tobruk is another fine 60's French film - a tense, exciting war drama - now on Blu-ray and definitely worth purchasing. The Brain is a bank-caper comedy with David Niven and Jean-Paul Belmondo - lots of fun but nothing remarkable via Blu-ray. Etre et Avoir is a brilliant documentary and finally looks authentic in the new format. The Master's Frenzy on Blu-ray suffers from some edge-enhancement that many may not notice. Suddenly is a very interesting film but we suggest waiting for Image Entertainment's transfer in December - to compare to the current - hoping it gets a widescreen rendering with improved visuals and lossless sound. On DVD, Eric has reviewed two Massimo Dallamano films - the intentionally sleazy Super Bitch and a horror entitled The Night Child..... Have a storm-free week!

The Amazing Spider-man BD - Orphaned as a child and taken in by his kindly Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field), lonely outsider Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) has spent his life wondering what happened to his parents. After clues lead him to his father’s former partner, eminent scientist Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), Peter is bitten by a genetically-engineered spider which imbues him with super-human abilities. Blu-ray Release date: November 9th, 2012

Suddenly BD - Fresh from his Academy Award winning comeback in 1953's From Here to Eternity, Frank Sinatra surprised world wide movie audiences by following up that life altering triumph with the darkest screen role of his legendary career- that of would be Presidential assassin John Baron in Suddenly. With a plotline inspired by then President Eisenhower s train trips to Palm Springs, California, Suddenly finds Baron holding pacifist war widow Ellen Benson (Nancy Gates), her family, and the town sheriff (Sterling Hayden) hostage while preparing to shoot the President. In a tough, taut 75 minutes suffused with classic film noir elements, Suddenly presents characters alienated from their surroundings, men and women trapped in the dark side of a post war American society where the old cultural certainties have vanished. Portraying a psychopath about whom he stated : I have never seen on the screen any character as consistently brutal as this man is , Sinatra here turns in a dramatic performance which ranks right alongside his classic turns in From Here to Eternity and The Manchurian Candidate. Blu-ray Release Date: October 16th, 2012

Etre et Avoir BD - The National Society of Film Critics awarded director Nicolas Philibert's wonderful To Be and to Have the Best Documentary prize for 2003. It warms the screen with grace, confidence and realism. Philibert researched over 500 schools to eventually settle on a one-room schoolhouse in France's rural Auvergne region. The children's ages varied accentuating the realistic presentation of a true small remote village education environment. The 35-year veteran teacher of Spanish origin shares the spotlight with his students. His quiet demeanor and soft-spoken mannerisms transfer to his students whose innocence overwhelms the screen. Blu-ray Release Date: November 12th, 2012

Weekend BD - This scathing late-sixties satire from Jean-Luc Godard is one of cinema’s great anarchic works. Determined to collect an inheritance from a dying relative, a bourgeois couple travel across the French countryside while civilization crashes and burns around them. Featuring a justly famous sequence in which the camera tracks along a seemingly endless traffic jam, and rich with historical and literary references, Weekend is a surreally funny and disturbing call for revolution, a depiction of society reverting to savagery, and— according to the credits—the end of cinema itself. Blu-ray Release Date: November 13th, 2012

Rope BD - Rope has the distinction of being filmed, (with the exception of a couple of close-ups) in one continuous take. So basically, the whole of the film takes place in real time, within the confines of a New York apartment. To demonstrate their intellectual superiority two university students (Farley Granger and John Dall) commit the `perfect' murder. Their philosophy professor (James Stewart) and others are invited over to their apartment for dinner and... let the games begin. Hitchcock was not fond of Rope with its stage-play banalities. Mainly because it removed one his keynote techniques - editing... and the choreography and staging of the filming process was extensive. Rope is certainly worth a visit for its use of language and Jimmy's role, but many felt it lacked the charm of some of Hitch's surrounding work. Blu-ray Release Date: October 29th, 2012

Long Day's Journey Into Night BD - Based on Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical play, this magnificent screen adaptation was directed by the great Sidney Lumet (Network) and starred Katharine Hepburn, Ralph Richardson, Jason Robards and Dean Stockwell. Set in 1912 New England, the story takes place in the summer home of aging actor James Tyrone (Richardson), an alcoholic miser who has spent a lifetime treading on the spirit of his dope-addicted wife, Mary (Hepburn). Oldest son Jamie (Robards) is a troublemaking alcoholic, envious of the writing talent of his sickly younger brother Edmund (Stockwell) who contracted tuberculosis while traveling overseas. The long day's journey concludes with a hellish night in which the three Tyrone men sit about drunkenly as Mary hallucinates about her younger and happier days. Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2012

Taxi for Tobruk BD - 1942 Tobruk, a French commando unit destroys a German gas depot. The four surviving soldiers manage to escape into the deadly desert and are soon lost. Exhausted and dehydrated, they spot a German armored car and attack and kill all but one. They start a surprising adventure where in the face of danger; the four men and their German prisoner discover the real meaning of solidarity. The stellar cast includes Lino Ventura (Army of Shadows), Charles Aznavour (Shoot the Piano Player) and Hardy Kruger (The Wild Geese). Directed by Denys de la Patellire (The Upper Hand). Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2012

Greed in the Sun BD - Rocco (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his female accomplice, AngŠle (Anne-Maire Coffinet) hijack a truck from a trucking company in the Saharan desert. The head of the trucking company, Castigliano (Gert Frobe, Goldfinger) hires Rocco's friend, Herv‚ (Lino Ventura) and a newly employed German, Hans (Reginald Kernan) to go after him and bring the back the valuable goods. After the two run into some trouble Castigliano sends a second truck driven by Mitch (Bernard Blier) and Khenouche (Doudou Babet). The great Henri Verneuil (The Sicilian Clan) directed this action-packed adventure in the tradition of Wages of Fear - the uncut director's cut. Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2012

The Brain BD - A special train has been commissioned to convey secret NATO funds from Paris to Brussels. Criminals on both sides of the channel plan to hijack the train: on the French side, Arthur (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a resourceful small-time crook and his pal Anatole (Bourvil); on the English side, the Brian (David Niven), a brilliant super criminal wanted all over the world. Standing in their way is Scanapicco (Eli Wallach), a gangster who wants "the Brain" dead for more than one reason. This is the original uncut and un-dubbed French version of the film. Blu-ray Release date: October 30th, 2012

The Night Child - Former cinematographer Massimo Dallamano (FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE) follows up his crime films (SUPER BITCH) and thrillers (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?) with this lyrical take on the child possession movies of the mid-seventies, though he never resorts to Linda-Blairisms to convey the daughter's behavior. The wintry London and autumnal Spoletto locations are lovingly captured by Franco Delli Colli, and Stelvio Cipriani's score largely eschews traditional horror music - the few instances of it anticipate his work with Goblin on SOLAMENTE NERO [1978] - in favor of variations on a romantic theme that infuse the story with a sense of inevitable tragedy. The "Perché?!" subtitle of the film's Italian title reappears at the end of the film echoing the ghost child's question before the final fade out. DVD Release Date: October 29th, 2012

Super Bitch - Blue movie blackmail and sexual depravity are at the heart of a wicked scam to manipulate rich, perverted men in this softcore pasta crime classic from Massimo Dallamano, cinematographer on A Fistful of Dollars and director of Giallo favourite What Have You Done To Solange? Italian trash cinema icon Ivan Rassimov is a police inspector working undercover to expose a London escort agency where the frequently naked Stephanie Beacham is being filmed in sexually compromising situations with her moneyed clients. These poor chumps will soon be smuggling drugs across international borders for her and her shadowy associates. Wallow in the sleaze and enjoy the depravity of Super Bitch, a film with all the car chases, murder, sex and moral ambiguity a cult movie fan could possibly want. DVD Release Date: October 29th, 2012

The Passion of Joan of Arc BD - With its stunning camerawork and striking compositions, Carl Th. Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc convinced the world that movies could be art. Renée Falconetti gives one of the greatest performances ever recorded on film, as the young maiden who died for God and France. Long thought to have been lost to fire, the original version was miraculously found in perfect condition in 1981—in a Norwegian mental institution. Blu-ray Release Date: November 19th, 2012

Frenzy BD - He redeemed himself with Frenzy, however, which marked his return not only to England for the first time in 20 years but also to the subject matter with which he'd started his career in thrillers back in 1926 -- murder, and a hunt for a serial killer in London. As the latest female victim of the "Necktie Murderer" is found in the Thames, raped and strangled, we meet Richard Blaney (Jon Finch), a bitter, belligerent ex-Royal Air Force officer who can't seem to find his way in life. He drinks too much and holds grudges too easily, and has an explosive temper, which is very near the surface as he's just lost his job. We also meet his girlfriend, a barmaid (Anna Massey); his ex-wife, a professional matchmaker (Barbara Leigh-Hunt); and his best friend, Covent Garden fruit seller Bob Rusk (Barry Foster). Their connection to the necktie murders will be clear to us in the first 30 minutes of the movie and, not coincidentally, completely misinterpreted by the police, as Chief Inspector Oxford (Alec McCowan) and his men tighten a circle around the wrong man, who rapidly runs out of options and allies. Blu-ray Release date: October 29th, 2012

Die Nibelungen BD - Scripted by Lang's wife at the time, Thea von Harbou (Metropolis), Siegfried establishes larger-than-life heroic characters who are defined by tests of valor and rigid codes of honor. In order to win the hand of Kriemhild (Margarete Schoen), Siegfried (Paul Richter) must win a bride for her brother, King Gunther (Theodor Loos). Kriemhild's Revenge begins after the death of Siegfried, and weaves the treacherous tale of his widow's ungodly vengeance upon his murderers. The noble qualities of the first film become liabilities in the second, as the blood oaths and vows of loyalty bring about a maelstrom of violence that results in the slaughter of entire armies (Lang would continue to explore this theme of bloodlust and revenge in such films as Fury, The Big Heat, and Rancho Notorious, but never with such ferocity). Kino Blu-ray Release date: November 6th, 2012
