Directed by Theodore J. Flicker
USA 1967

Writer-director Theodore J. Flicker’s (The Troublemaker) psychedelic satire is one of the wackiest and wittiest cult-classics of the sixties! With the responsibilities of world peace, the national debt and dessert choices at state dinners constantly on his mind, it seems like a good idea to find the President of the United States an analyst to help him deal with these burdens. Dr. Sidney Schaefer (the great James Coburn, Our Man Flint, Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round) wins the coveted job, but not without a price—governments from all over the globe are soon targeting the hapless doctor. Some want him to spill whatever secrets may have been discussed in the Oval Office, while others want to silence him permanently to prevent him from possibly revealing that very information! Co-starring Godfrey Cambridge (Cotton Comes to Harlem), Severn Darden (Conquest of the Planet of the Apes) and Joan Delaney (Don’t Drink the Water).

***

At first, Dr. Sidney Schaefer feels honored and thrilled to be offered the job of the President's Analyst. But then the stress of the job and the paranoid spies that come with a sensitive government position get to him, and he runs away. Now spies from all over the world are after him, either to get him for their own side or to kill him and prevent someone else from getting him.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (April 2024): Kino have transferred Theodore J. Flicker's The President's Analyst to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "Brand New HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative". It looks quite fetching aside from some inherent softness early on in the film. The film's many close-ups look quite sharp. There are few speckles. Colors ands contrast are well-balanced and the transfer is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. All good.

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. The President's Analyst has few aggressive effects but is mostly lauded for the score by Argentinean Lalo Schifrin (famous as the guy behind the Mission: Impossible theme as well as Cool Hand Luke, Coogan's Bluff, Joe Kidd, Eye of the Cat, Rollercoaster, Charley Varrick, The Nude Bomb, Day of the Animals, Hit!, Man on a Swing, The Manitou, Tango and many other films), with Barry McGuire performing Inner Manipulations, She's Ready to Be Free sung by Clear Light (as The Clear Light) and Handel's Joy to the World,  all sounding clean with consistent dialogue in the lossless transfer. Kino offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offer a new commentary by film historian/writer Julie Kirgo (writer of Becoming John Ford) and writer/filmmaker Peter Hankoff (Producer of The Cold Blue) and a second commentary by Tim Lucas (Nozone – Reviews of Art, Cult, and Genre Cinema, 2003-2012) that was on the Imprint Blu-ray from 2021. Tim discusses how TV versions he watched of The President's Analyst were truncated but this is the true theatrical version (NOTE: even if alternate scenes were added for TV.) Tim identifies some of the New York locations, specific dates and he shares some nice anecdotes about actress Joan Delaney (playing girlfriend Nan Butler in The President's Analyst.) It's filled with stories and details of the production, filmmaker and cast. Another exceptional job by Tim. The new commentary by Julie Kirgo and writer/filmmaker Peter Hankoff discuss where the film fits in to the bigger context of history, politics etc., the original screenplay changes, the film as a 'spy movie', the cast, composer Lalo Schifrin, Robert Evans, the director and much more including that Theodore J. Flicker was a friend of Kirgo's family and stories about that relationship. Fun! Both commentaries are filled with information. Lastly is a trailer for The President's Analyst and other trailers.

Theodore J. Flicker's political lampoon The President's Analyst was the first film Robert Evans green-lit as the new head of Paramount Studios. It portrays three-letter government agencies in a less-than-flattering manner and the terms "FBI" were post-changed to "FBR", and "CIA" to "CEA" - and they had to redub the voice track to reflect those alternations. The President's Analyst seems to have been an unjustly neglected satire and biting paranoid conspiracy-theory romp. Coburn give one of his best performances. Thanks to Peter for encouraging me to watch / review it. I loved it. The Kino Blu-ray has two excellent commentaries and the film looking solid in 1080P. Absolutely recommended.
