Legendary director William Wyler (The Collector, Ben-Hur) concluded his filmmaking career with The Liberation of L.B. Jones, a searing indictment of institutional racism starring Lee J Cobb (The Dark Past), Anthony Zerbe (The Omega Man), and Roscoe Lee Browne (Cisco Pike).

When Black funeral director L B Jones (Browne) finds that his pregnant wife Emma (Lola Falana) is having an affair with white policeman Worth (Zerbe), he demands a divorce. Worth and his racist colleagues exact brutal revenge upon Jones, and conspire to cover up their actions with the assistance of the local District Attorney (Cobb)

With supporting performances from Barbara Hershey (Hannah and Her Sisters) and Yaphet Kotto (Blue Collar), and with a screenplay by Jesse Hill Ford (adapting his own novel) and Stirling Silliphant (Murphy’s War,) The Liberation of L.B. Jones is a shocking tale of intolerance and injustice.

***

The Liberation of L.B. Jones, a 1970 American neo-noir drama directed by William Wyler in his final film, adapts Jesse Hill Ford's novel to expose the brutal undercurrents of racism in a small Tennessee town during the civil rights era.

The story centers on L.B. Jones (Roscoe Lee Browne), a prosperous Black undertaker who hires white lawyer Oman Hedgepath (Lee J. Cobb) to file for divorce from his younger wife Emma (Lola Falana), suspecting her affair with white policeman Willie Joe Worth (Anthony Zerbe); this act ignites a chain of violence, corruption, and murder as local authorities conspire to silence Jones and maintain the racial status quo.

Featuring strong performances from a cast including Yaphet Kotto, Barbara Hershey, and Lee Majors, the film unflinchingly portrays systemic injustice, police brutality, and the perils of challenging segregation, blending tense courtroom drama with shocking acts of vengeance to critique the Deep South's moral decay.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator Blu-ray (August 2025): Indicator have transferred William Wyler's "The Liberation of L.B. Jones" to Blu-ray. While the 1080P image is generally sharp and clean, with no serious stability issues, debris, or encoding anomalies, it appears slightly soft and dated in some areas, particularly in wider shots or low-light scenes likely reflecting the age of the source material rather than restoration flaws. Wyler's visual style favors a vivid, melodramatic aesthetic, with cinematographer Robert Surtees employing stark contrasts and deep-focus shots to capture the claustrophobic tension of small-town Southern life, emphasizing shadows and harsh lighting in interrogation scenes to evoke noir-ish dread. Overall, this HD presentation offers a respectable upgrade for a 1970 film, preserving its cinematic essence without modern over-processing, making it a solid viewing experience for fans.

NOTE: We have added 46 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Indicator use a linear PCM mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. Sound design amplifies the film's brutality, with intense impacts during assaults and a sparse, ominous score by Elmer Bernstein (The Tin Star, The Shootist The Great Escape, See No Evil, Sudden Fear, From the Terrace, The Hallelujah Trail, The Grifters, Robot Monster, Devil in a Blue Dress, Saturn 3, Birdman of Alcatraz, Love With the Proper Stranger, The Bride at Remagen, The Comancheros, The World of Henry Orient, Kings of the Sun, Hud, To Kill a Mockingbird, Summer and Smoke) that underscores moral decay. Dialogue remains intelligible and well-centered. An isolated music and effects track is also included, allowing viewers to appreciate the soundtrack's innovative elements in isolation, making this a standout audio presentation that holds up exceptionally well for a mono mix from the era. Indicator offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

Indicator packs this Blu-ray with a robust selection of supplements that provide deep contextual insight into the film's production, themes, and legacy, starting with a new audio commentary featuring journalist / author Bryan Reesman and film critic / filmmaker Mike Sargent (2025), who offer engaging analysis of the racial dynamics and Wyler's direction. Key video features include "Dignified Rage", 25-minutes from 2025, where author Neil Sinyard explores the film's creation and reception, and "Southern Injustice" (also new running 25 minutes), with Josiah Howard (Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide) discussing the cast, blaxploitation precursors, and societal impact; additional bonuses encompass an isolated music and effects track, and an image gallery of promotional materials. The package is rounded out by a limited edition 40-page booklet containing a new essay by Fintan McDonagh (Edward Dmytryk: Reassessing His Films and Life,) archival interviews with Roscoe Lee Browne and Jesse Hill Ford, a production report by Edwin Howard, and film credits, making this a comprehensive set for cinephiles.

William Wyler's "The Liberation of L.B. Jones" adapts Jesse Hill Ford's 1965 novel The Liberation of Lord Byron Jones into a searing neo-noir drama set in the fictional Southern town of Somerton, Tennessee, during the civil rights era. Released amid the turbulent aftermath of the civil rights movement - following the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and amid urban riots and protests - The Liberation of L.B. Jones draws from real Southern tensions, with Ford's novel inspired by events in his hometown of Humboldt, Tennessee, where its publication sparked backlash and even contributed to a tragic shooting incident involving the author. At its core, The Liberation of L.B. Jones dissects systemic racism, portraying the South as a powder keg where economic success offers no shield for Black individuals against white violence and judicial complicity. Themes of interracial sex, police brutality, and corrupted justice dominate, with Jones's "liberation" ironically achieved through death, symbolizing the impossibility of true freedom under oppression. Legacy-wise, it endures as a prescient exploration of police brutality and racial dynamics, influencing discussions on Hollywood's evolving liberalism, though its sensationalism dates it. The Liberation of L.B. Jones stands as a flawed yet vital artifact of 1970s cinema, using melodrama to expose the agonies of racial injustice in a way that challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about America's past and present. Wyler's swan song transcends its exploitation roots through strong performances and thematic depth, offering a ruthless dismantling of liberal illusions and a stark reminder of systemic oppression's enduring grip. Overall the Indicator Blu-ray package excels in contextual depth and presentation quality, making it an essential acquisition for fans of 1970s social dramas, civil rights cinema, Wyler completists and boutique releases that honor overlooked gems with care and insight. Certainly recommended.
