Roman Porno Reboot Collection Vol. 1 brings together five films from
Nikkatsu’s 2016 revival of its legendary Roman Porno series.
Commissioned to mark the 45th anniversary of the original line (1971–1988), the
project invited five acclaimed directors to create new works following the
classic Roman Porno rules: roughly 70–80 minute runtimes and frequent erotic
scenes, while allowing room for artistic and narrative ambition. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
NOTE: The term "Porno" is something of a misnomer
here. While the five films in this collection do contain nudity and feature
sex workers or sexually charged situations, they are far from pornography in
the modern sense. There are no graphic close-ups, no visible penetration,
and almost no explicit genital imagery. Instead, sex functions as a
narrative and thematic backdrop rather than the central attraction. These
are serious, character-driven dramas that use eroticism to explore power
dynamics, intimacy at the deviant end of the spectrum, loneliness, trauma, female agency, and the complexities of desire
- much in the spirit of the original 1970s
Nikkatsu Roman Porno films, which
were often more about storytelling and social observation than pure
titillation. Erotic scenes are rarely gratuitous; they reveal character,
trauma, societal hypocrisy (censorship laws, sex-work stigma), and the
tension between liberation and damage. Desire is portrayed as both creative
force and destructive trap.
The image for the films is clean, sharp, and well-detailed with natural
colors and solid contrast, giving each film a contemporary clarity that
contrasts nicely with the grainier 1970s originals. Bitrates sit in a modest
range (around 24 Mbps), which is perfectly adequate but not class-leading
for a 4K set. Most discs are single-layer or lightly layered, while the disc
containing two films is dual-layered. Overall, the presentations are very
good and faithful to the source, though they lacks the higher-bitrate
robustness of some other recent Vinegar Syndrome releases.
All five
2016 Roman Porno Reboot films were shot quickly on a low budget with
the same strict rules as the originals, but they were made with modern
digital cameras. This gives them a very different technical feel from the
grainy 35mm film stock of the 1970s–80s classics you know from reviews found
HERE. Antiporno stands out as extremely colorful,
theatrical, op-art, haute-couture look with bold lighting and artificial
sets. Very stylized and dramatic. Aroused by Gymnopedies has a more
grungy grit. Dawn of the Felines showcases some naturalistic
neon-soaked Tokyo nights. It feel realistic with a slightly gritty urban
look. Wet Woman in the Wind was show mostly outdoors with bright,
energetic, visuals that match its anarchic tone. White Lily is
atmospheric and sensual with beautiful lighting on skin and pottery. It
seems inspired by Masaru Konuma’s abstract erotic style - moody and
intimate.

The
Blu-ray
audio presentations are also clean and consistent across the set as you
might expect fro films made in 2016. All five films feature linear PCM
stereo tracks, with four also including Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mixes (in the
original Japanese) - Aroused by Gymnopedies being the only title
limited to the 2.0 channel. The sound is well-balanced, with clear
dialogue and a natural dynamic range that suits the intimate,
character-driven tone of the films. The scores are generally understated
and atmospheric, though Aroused by Gymnopedies distinguishes
itself through its prominent use of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies, which
gives the film a distinctive, artistic and melancholic quality. Audio
remains clear and appropriately scaled to the material. Film Movement
offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'A'-locked
Blu-rays.
The supplemental features on
Film Movement's limited edition
Blu-ray set
are consistent across all five discs and presented entirely in Japanese
with optional English subtitles. Each film includes a Making Of
(roughly 19–24 minutes) that mixes behind-the-scenes footage of the
quick one-week shoots with cast and crew interviews, offering genuine
insight into the production challenges and directorial approaches. The
Cast and Crew Introductions (12–20 minutes each) were filmed on
stage at Shinjuku Musashino Hall between November 2016 and February
2017; they consist of the performers and key crew members briefly
introducing themselves and their roles in a relaxed, theatrical setting
and out-of-character. Short theatrical trailers (all around 1 minute)
round out each disc. The extras are informative rather than exhaustive,
but they provide valuable context for fans of the reboot project.
There are easy comparisons between the five 2016
Nikkatsu
Roman Porno Reboot films and the classic Roman Porno / pinku films (things
like
Night of the Felines,
Watcher in the Attic,
Woods Are Wet,
Flower and Snake,
Apartment Wife,
Angel Guts series, etc.) - characters were often tragic or
socially critical (women trapped by patriarchy, class, or circumstance)/
they were shot with a gritty, exploitation edge / directors like Noboru
Tanaka, Tatsumi Kumashiro, Masaru Konuma, and Shōgorō Nishimura brought
real artistry and emotional weight and the female characters were
frequently victims, rebels, or complex survivors. Dawn of the Felines
is the closest in spirit to the originals and is likely a modern
sequel/homage to Noboru Tanaka’s
Night of the Felines - one of the best and most respected Roman
Porno films. It has the same empathetic look at sex workers’ daily lives
and loneliness, but feels a bit cleaner and less raw than Tanaka’s
version. Sion Sono's Antiporno is easily the biggest departure.
It’s deliberately anti-erotic and meta - it constantly breaks the fourth
wall and critiques the Roman Porno genre itself. Where the originals
were usually sincere (even when sensational), this one is ironic and
confrontational. It’s the most “2016” of the bunch. I got a kick out of
Wet Woman in the Wind which I found the most fun and anarchic. It
has the playful, chaotic energy of some of the lighter pink films, but
with a much stronger sense of female sexual power. It’s closer in spirit
to something like
Sex & Fury or the wilder
Toei Pinky Violence films than the more serious
Nikkatsu dramas. Aroused by Gymnopedies is the most
“dramatic” reboot - probably closest to the emotional, character-driven
style of Kumashiro or Nishimura. It has real melancholy and focuses on a
man’s quiet desperation. My favorite of the five, White Lily is
the most psychological. It has echoes of the darker, more obsessive
Roman Porno films (think some of the
Angel Guts entries or Konuma’s work), but with a modern lesbian
relationship at the center. It’s atmospheric, erotic and intense. The
shared rules (short runtime, frequent explicit content, low budget)
paradoxically encouraged creativity. Directors used the mandate
inventively rather than formulaically, proving the Roman Porno structure
remains a fertile platform for bold storytelling. The
reboots are very interesting as a modern experiment. They seem to try to
update the genre with more female perspective and self-awareness.
They’re more like art-house variations on the formula than pure
continuations. Together they form a wildly eclectic but thematically
coherent portrait of desire as both liberation and trap. Across all
five, female agency, shifting power dynamics, and the messy intersection
of sex with trauma and identity take center stage - exactly the spirit
of the original Roman Porno ethos, but filtered through contemporary
sensibilities and elevated by Film Movement’s typically excellent 4K
restorations, making-of featurettes, and the limited-edition
packaging offers a slipcase. Taken together, the
Roman Porno Reboot Collection Vol. 1 demonstrates the enduring
vitality of
Nikkatsu’s erotic tradition. These films are not mere nostalgia
pieces or softcore throwbacks; they are thoughtful, sometimes
provocative experiments that use the old rules to say new things about
sex, power, loneliness, and art in 21st-century Japan. The result is one of the
most accessible entry points into Japanese erotic cinema available on
Blu-ray.
Absolutely recommended to a receptive niche. |
