("Beyond Terror" or "Further Than Fear" or "Terrorgang")

Directed by Tomás Aznar
Spain 1980

Their Nightmare Was Further than Fear... It was BEYOND TERROR! After a drug-fueled night of violence, a group of young degenerates and their hostages find themselves stranded in a remote, abandoned church in rural Spain. Their evening of debauchery and blasphemy quickly turns to greed when they discover a local legend that tells of a vast fortune guarded by mummies in the catacombs beneath the ruins. Their lust for the treasure is short-lived as they find that the supernatural horror in the catacombs is something further than fear... it is Beyond Terror!

Beyond Terror (Más allá del terror) is a lost gem that is long overdue for rediscovery. Never available on home video in the United States, Beyond Terror makes its worldwide Blu-ray debut from Cauldron Films with a brand new 4K scan from the camera negative that has been restored to its original grim glory. Co-written by Juan Piquer Simón (Pieces, Slugs), this early '80s hybrid unfolds like an homage to Amando de Ossorio's Tombs of the Blind Dead, by way of Mario Bava's Rabid Dogs, with a healthy dose of violence, gore, sex, eerie crypts and supernatural revenge!

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Cauldron Films Blu-ray (July 2021): Cauldron Films have transferred Tomás Aznar's Beyond Terror to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "4K restoration from the original negative". It looks fairly modest but vastly superior to the available bootlegs that have circled around. It's inherently soft, even a bit waxy at times but there is some heavy grain and the overall visuals are consistent. It can have a pastel cast over it. This is probably the best this less-seen film will look in this format. It's certainly more than watchable.

On their Blu-ray, Cauldron Films use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original Spanish language. It is about the level of the video; imperfect but highly serviceable. Again, a function of the source. There is minor music, although no official score -  a church bell, heart beats effects, gurgling creatures and a few piercing screams. . Cauldron Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Cauldron Films Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Kat Ellinger. She discusses why Beyond Terror has been so under-seen - the distribution problems - only being available in bad bootlegs. She talks about the dialogue - the frequent swearing, the Satanist angle, the harshness of the characters. She covers a lot of this genre in Spain and the era, the effects, Beyond Terror as a biker-zombie film and much more. It's excellent. There is also an image gallery and the package has reversible cover with original Spanish title and poster art.

While I enjoyed Cauldron's simultaneously released The Crimes of the Black Cat Blu-ray more, Beyond Terror has some unusually appealing genre qualities and a scene or two reminiscent of David Cronenberg's Scanners. It's quite a harsh film with gratuitous social violence and revenge shifting to a creepy horror. The Cauldron Films Blu-ray. has the best a/v of the film we are likely to get (the best its has ever looked on digital, by a wide margin) and the invaluable Ellinger commentary. Fans keen on Euro-cult cinema may wish to pick up this 'hard to see' curiosity. Pretty wild and not everyone's cup-of-tea. I'm very intrigued by Cauldron Films and hope they continue to expose and transfer these less-discussed genre films onto Blu-ray
