Lust for Gold: A Race Against Time is a true story is about obsession, greed, and the hunt for gold. Boyhood dreams of treasure lead to a lifelong search when a retired missile scientist makes a monumental discovery and tempts fate for fortune as he hatches a secret plan to prove his claim. With his estranged son at his side, he secures an entertainment and personal injury lawyer who assembles a team ? a retired blackjack dealer, a veterinary assistant, and a dog. The plan? To covertly remove gold bullion from within the most restricted area of Federal land deep within Superstition Mountain, Arizona. But the one risk greater than facing the unforgiving terrain and Federal prosecution is time.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (June 2021): Kino have transferred Robert May's documentary Lust for Gold: A Race Against Time to Blu-ray. It is beautifully shot on HD showing gorgeous vistas around the Superstition Mountains in Maricopa County, Arizona. It's as pristine as you might imagine with some inter-cuts of the 1.33:1 black and white film (with Ida Lupino + Glenn Ford) that we've reviewed HERE, stating in the opening "This film contains:
"References to the 1945 book Thunder Gods Gold by Barry Storm and the 1949 adapted film Lust for Gold. The accounts of modern-day treasure hunters and a new discovery claimed by retired missile scientist Robert L. Kesselring

On their Blu-ray, Kino offers the option of DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo tracks (24-bit) in the original English language. It is as clear and crisp as you might imagine without many instances of separation. There is a score by Bill Wandel, adding nicely to some of the non-dialogue scenes. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray offers an additional 1/2 hour scene entitled Jesuit Tomb with more background by an affable participant. There is also a trailer.

What I liked about Robert May's Lust for Gold: A Race Against Time was the lack of gloss and hype. It was seemingly honest with the rag-tag team exporting various degrees of passion, arguments, skirting the law, members leaving and others splitting up (if temporarily.) They come across as fairly compromised in the end and although mildly vérité - dragged the excitement down considerably - as does the site being seemingly looted prior to their arrival. We meet other "Dutch Hunters" and get a good background on the historical basis for the lost treasure adventure seeking upwards of a billion dollars. It ends fairly passively but has an interesting voice-over at the conclusion. Predictably there are no definitive answers except a portrayal of this niche of fortune-seeking men. The Kino Blu-ray does an expert job of showing the HD presentation, but I expect this might appeal to a small, prospector, audience of Gold Bugs.
