Adele, a female lawyer, brilliantly played by Assumpta Serna, passionately defends criminals, believing that everyone deserves a second chance and that criminality is more often than not bred by deprivation. In the courtroom, a pair of local hoods sees her in action and decides to follow her. They steal her car, find the keys to her country villa and decide to rob the place. Unfortunately, Adele's family turns up at the villa mid-burglary and her husband is killed. But, that is only the beginning of the nightmare…

Directed by Jordi Grau who made the horror classics BLOOD CEREMONY and LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE, HUNTING GROUND is an intense, gripping crime story that takes a savagely realistic look at the social divide between rich and poor in the big city. The climax of the film is unrelenting in its depiction of sexual violence and revenge, and includes one of the most shocking sequences ever seen in a mainstream film.

A pacifist lawyer's husband is accidentally killed during a home invasion. One of the culprits is caught, and his deranged brother begins to threaten the lawyer that if his brother isn't released, he will violently retaliate.

ADDITION: Mondo Macabro Blu-ray (June 2021): Mondo Macabro have transferred Jorge Grau's Hunting Ground to Blu-ray. It is cited as being a "Brand new 4k transfer from film negative, digitally restored". I don't have anything to compare it to, but it looks pretty good in 1080P on a single0layered disc with a supportive bitrate. It is in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and exports a reasonable texture on the clear, tight image. Colors carry stability and there is frequent depth. I saw no untoward damage and only very minor speckles. The HD presentation looked impressively solid and highly pleasing overall.

On their Blu-ray, Mondo Macabro offer optional DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel tracks (16-bit) in the original Spanish language or an English DUB. There are some very aggressive effects from gunplay to screams but they come through authentically flat without much depth. I don't see a credited score but there is music; Wagner's Tristán e Isolda, Residuos' Adestes fideles, and briefly Raka-Rock... Mondo Macabro offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Mondo Macabro Blu-ray offers a 50-minute interview with director Jorge Grau, in Spanish with English subtitles. It adds some flavor to his career an direction of Hunting Ground. I would have thought a commentary was  warranted do to the complexities of the story and on its characters. There are also 14-minutes of delicious Mondo Macabro previews and the package has brand new sleeve art from Justin Coffee.

Things are mostly sedate through the majority of Jorge Grau's Hunting Ground laying a base for the moral conflicts that arise - but the film ends with some excessive, sadistic, violence. While that is unpleasant, to say the least, the premise of the thriller story and its evolution is intelligently realized. Perhaps when we are all facing the test, do we embark on a moral double-standard? I found that angle exceptionally interesting and you really don't know where the film will end up going. 'Shocking' might be an answer. Overall this is another unique film brought to us my Mondo Macabro and the Blu-ray is up to their usual high standard. Adventurous fans of Euro-cinema should be keen about this one.
