Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Imprint Blu-ray (May 2021): Imprint have transferred Mark Pellington's The Mothman Prophecies to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a very high bitrate. It looks pleasing with impressive detail in the film's many close-ups. Colors appear true with some richness, there is plenty of depth, no gloss, strong contrast and seems like a solid representation of the film - certainly a major step ahead of SD.

NOTE: We have added 80 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Imprint offer the option of a robust DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track or a linear PCM stereo option (both 24-bit) in the original English language. The sound is actually a big part of the film experience. The surround has some surprising, head-turning, separations and there is a score by 'tomandandy' (2006's The Hills Have Eyes, The Rules of Attraction.) There is plenty of electronic, and other, music augmenting the score - by groups such as Biosphere, Bowery Electric, King Black Acid, Luxurious etc. adding a valuable layer to the film's suspense and eerie 'mystery of the unknown' qualities. Sound design quality is very effective in the lossless. Imprint offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Imprint Blu-ray offers a commentary by Mark Pellington previously available on past DVDs. He is intelligent and revealing - sharing insights, anecdotes, self-criticism, praising others, why he made the film, the color scheme, sound of the film, the choices he made and why - plus much more. I was impressed with his comments. Imprint add four new separate interviews, running almost an hour with director Mark Pellington, editor Brian Berdan, composers 'tomandandy' (Tom Hajdu and Andy Milburn) and production designer Richard Hoover who share keen recollections of their part in the project. Included from past DVD editions are the 1/4 hour Making Of featurette, Half Light music video by Low, the interesting 3/4 hour Search for the Mothman Documentary, deleted scenes and the two part hour-long Day By Day – A Director’s Journey documentary directed by Jason Free, Mark Pellington in 2003. Lastly, are a theatrical trailer and stills gallery. The package offers a limited edition slipcase.

I've always enjoyed The Mothman Prophecies. I think Mark Pellington (I enjoyed his Henry Poole is Here) crafted a fairly unique and appealing mystery/horror. I loved the small, subtle, touches that allow you see new details every time you see it. I also have a penchant for the small-town venue (like Dark Was the Night). There is less on the 'creature' aspects of the story and more on the psychological - which I genuinely appreciated. I was very happy the Imprint Blu-ray to see this entertaining film in a 1080P experience with the valuable extras - new and old. Absolutely recommended!
