Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Imprint Blu-ray (May 2021): Imprint have transferred Mike Nichols's Regarding Henry to Blu-ray. The film is located on a dual-layered Blu-ray, with the added assistance of a high bitrate. The source material isn't specified (other than this being a "1080p high definition presentation from Paramount Pictures'') but one could fairly assume that this is not a 4K restoration from an original camera negative. The film still shows a fair amount of discernible details, even through a visible grain that leans toward the heavy side. There are moments that can look a little off-kilter, with backgrounds seeming a tad overexposed, or colors bleeding a bit. These are few and far between, and for the most part, this is a decent transfer that is surely better than any previous SD release.

There are two audio options on this Imprint
Blu-ray. The first is a DTS-HD High-Res audio track (24-bit in 5.1 surround). The other choice is a 24-bit linear PCM 2.0 stereo track. The surround effects are minimal, yet effective, yet the stereo option seems to have a more realistically balanced sound. Either way, the score from Hans Zimmer (The Wind, 12 Years a SlaveThe Thin Red LineBroadcast NewsAngels and Demons etc.) is allowed to shine. "Walking on the Moon" by the Police also appears on the soundtrack. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'Free' Blu-ray from Imprint.

Imprint has included a few extras on their
Blu-ray disc of "Regarding Henry''. First up is a commentary with film critic / essayist / journalist / author Peter Tonguette. The author has written books on Orson Welles and Peter Bogdanovich, and here he seems to be most interested with this film in respect to the canon of Mike Nichols. Tonguette begins by discussing some stylistic choices, common to most of Nichols work, not least of which is the uninterrupted long take. This is no fluffy commentary though, with the astute critic noting many deep and thoughtful notes on the film and filmmaking. One particular moment of interest involves Tonguette describing why Nichols chose to linger on the extravagant lifestyle of Henry, with his signature lingering long-take shots. The desired effect is to have the audience experience the same shock and dissociation as Henry, upon his return from rehab, back into his former life of so-called luxury. I won't spoil any more of this track suffice to say that it is well worth your time. Imprint has also included 3 vintage Bobbie Wygant interviews, lasting from 5 to 7-minutes in length. These feature actors Harrison Ford, Annette Bening, and Mikki Allen. The film's theatrical trailer rounds out this Region 'Free' Blu-ray from Imprint films.

Mike Nichols' "Regarding Henry" (with a script from J.J. Abrams) is often overlooked when speaking of the director's output, but Peter Tonguette's commentary helps to re-contextualize the film. Imprint's
Blu-ray will be a welcome addition to any Nichols fan.
