Directed by René Clair
USA 1944

What would happen if someone could get tomorrow’s newspaper headlines today? This charming period comedy tells the story of a reporter (Dick Powell) who wishes he could scoop his colleagues by knowing about events before they occur. When a mysterious old man gives him the news a day in advance, his life is turned upside down. Racing to prevent a headline predicting his own death, he gets mixed up with a beautiful fortune teller (Linda Darnell) and her overprotective uncle (Jack Oakie). It Happened Tomorrow was acclaimed French director René Clair’s (Beauty of the Devil) follow up to his equally enchanting I Married a Witch, both made during his exile in Hollywood during World War II. Clair’s famous whimsical style is evident in this cautionary tale; be careful - what you wish for might come true. This sparkling black and white film was restored from a 4K scan.

***

A young turn-of-the-century newspaper man finds he can get hold of the next day's paper. This brings more problems than fortune, especially as his new girlfriend is part of a phony clairvoyant act.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Cohen Media / Kino Blu-ray (May 2021): Cohen Media have transferred, released by Kino Lorber, René Clair's It Happened Tomorrow to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from "restored from a 4K scan". It looms a little faint with rounded corners on a single-layered disc with a middling bitrate. It looks consistent, clean with no blemishes, barely a speckle and a pleasing 1080P presentation. I enjoyed the Blu-ray image, and the fun, vintage, film. There have been some sub-par SD releases but this provides a solid transfer.

On their Blu-ray, Cohen Media use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. It is likewise consistent and clean with audible dialogue without flaws - authentically flat supporting the film well. The score is by Austria-Hungarian composer Robert Stolz, sounding remarkable. Augmenting the the score is music in the film including the traditional Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms sung by those gathered at the beginning, Stephen Foster's I Would Not Die in Spring Time sung by the newspaper men, Verdi's Ah, fors' e lui from "La Traviata" and Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Cohen Media / Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Cohen Media / Kino Blu-ray offers a only a trailer, no commentary nor film-specific liner notes.

René Clair's It Happened Tomorrow is a lot of wholesome, amusing, enjoyment. The themes have been repeated many times in other, forthcoming, film plots. Knowing the future and attempting to change it to suit your circumstance - with money or love. Future Noir-cycle players Powell and Darnell add some impressive flavor and more brilliantly realized cinema by director René Clair. I really had a good time with my viewing and the bare-bones Cohen Media Blu-ray gave me a solid 1080P presentation. Fans of vintage film are encouraged to pick up.
