Directed by Scott McGinnis
USA 1995

Leslie Chase will do anything it takes to push through his mega real estate development, even if it includes arranging the massacre of a Mexican native tribe to clear a patch of land. But no bad deed goes unpunished as, after murdering the tribe's chief in cold blood, Leslie's body and mind are taken over by the chief's vengeful spirit. Forced into committing a series of heinous murders Leslie's life is thrown into greater peril when a private detective, who has been hired to investigate the disappearance of one of his victims, begins to suspect that the elusive real estate tycoon is harboring a deadly secret...

An intriguing mix of supernatural possession horror and straightforward slasher, complemented by several bloody set-pieces, character actor Scott McGinnis' (Making the Grade) second feature film, LAST GASP, stars Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgement Day), Golden Globe nominee Joanna Pacula, Nan Martin (Cast Away, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors), and cult filmmaker Don Edmonds (Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS). Vinegar Syndrome presents this under-seen piece of direct-to-video horror on Blu-ray for the first time, newly restored in 4K.

A ruthless real estate developer is possessed by the violent spirits of the Native American tribesmen he massacred, which force him to go on an indiscriminate killing spree against his will.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Vinegar Syndrome presents "Last Gasp", a previously direct-to-video horror flick, on Blu-ray for the first time. The 1995 Robert Patrick starred thriller is newly scanned & restored in 4k from its 35mm original camera negative, and is located on a single-layer Blu-ray disc. The 1080P image (in 1.85:1) is kept pretty smooth thanks to a supportive bitrate. There is little to complain about in terms of detail, in fact the few shots that seemed a little unfocused were more than likely just that, a product of the filmmaking and not the restoration/transfer. There are a handful of nighttime exterior/interior shots that benefit from an efficient contrast. There is a medium grain to the shots, giving the film a theatrical look (despite its straight-to-video roots). Another thoroughly impressive transfer from the folks at Vinegar Syndrome.

"Last Gasp" is presented in 24-bit 2.0 DTS-HD Master audio stereo. The sound is as good as you may expect, with the jungle noises, gunfire, etc. amidst a pretty lackluster score from Joseph Williams. There are also some songs with Joseph and Amye Williams. There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region 'A'
Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome.

There are 16-minutes of 'extensive outtakes', which really amounts to a collage of footage from the shoot set to the film's god-awful new age jazzy softcore soundtrack. Most of this footage consists of extra shots of the tribal rituals, nothing too essential or plot-heavy that was excised. The film's original theatrical trailer also appears. This
Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome also features reversible cover artwork.

Bad guy land-developer gets some ancient curse after killing a local Mexican tribesman (the less said about the exotification plot the better.) Actor/Director Scott McGinnis' 1995 softcore exploitation thriller is not my cup of tea. It performs like an episode of "Tales From the Crypt'' or "Twilight Zone" or "Creepshow", yet comes off feeling way too long and drawn-out. There are some occasional neat gore effects, and fans of the ol' T&A will get a few skinemax-worthy moments. Check the Vinegar Syndrome
Blu-ray out at your own risk.
