Directed by Michel Levesque
USA 1971
The Devil's Advocates an outlaw gang of Harley-riding hellions led by Adam (Stephen Oliver, The Naked Zoo, Motorpsycho!) and his old lady Helen (Donna Anders, Count Yorga, Vampire) troll the dusty highways of the American Southwest in search of the next great kick, whether it be sex, drugs, or violence. After dispatching a pair of rednecks unfriendly to their lifestyle, the Advocates run roughshod over a gas station before taking to the road again, where they encounter a cloistered sect of Satanic Monks led by high priest One (Severn Darden, Battle for the Planet of the Apes). A mass-drugging, a ritual sacrifice, a topless snake-dance, and a scene-clearing fistfight ensue but it's too late; the spell has been cast, and the two shall become... Werewolves on Wheels! Equal parts road movie biker pic and black magic monster flick, this cross-genre film marked the directorial debut of Michael Levesque (Sweet Sugar), art designer on Russ Myers films Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens and Up! Also starring Billy Gray (TV's Father Knows Best) and pop singer Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction), Werewolves on Wheels defies classification. Is it art? Is it exploitation? The answer is a resounding yes. Now see this cult classic for the first time in HD! *** A biker gang visits a monastery where they encounter black-robed monks engaged in worshipping Satan. When the monks try to persuade one of the female bikers, Helen, to become a satanic sacrifice the bikers smash up the monastery and leave. The monks have the last laugh, though, as Helen, as a result of the satanic rituals, is now possessed and at night changes into a werewolf, with dire results for the biker gang. |

On their
Blu-ray,
Code Red use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the
original English language. It has similar weaknesses of the original
production limitations but dialogue is audible without undue hiss or
pops. The score is Don Gere
(Sweet Sugar),
which uses the previous 'Sweet Sugar theme' and is unremarkable for the
most part - more suitable for a biker film than a horror. Code Red offer
no
subtitles on their Region 'A'
Blu-ray.
The Code Red
Blu-ray
Werewolves on
Wheels
is about 75% biker film with the werewolf'ing seeming like an
afterthought. It is kinda of appealing to mix the two genres into such a
hybrid. Plenty of previously seen 'exploitation', or once notable, cast
members; Steve Oliver (The Bloody Slaying of Sarah Ridelander,
motorcycle films Angels from Hell and Motorpsycho!), Donna
Anders (Dream No Evil), Billy Gray (notable films like
The Day the Earth Stood Still, but ending his career with The
Vampyre Wars) etc. It's a function of its period and has nostalgic
value with some gratuitous Satanic ritual nudity, complete with snake.
It's quite scattered for a viable horror, with a rabid werewolf melee,
but some may find the latter cult/lycanthropy-angle appealing. The
bare-bones Code Red Blu-ray
may interest Drive-In genre-loving fans but only in its notable a/v
improvement over DVD.
