(aka "Russian Raid")

Directed by Denis Kryuchkov
Russia 2020

Inspired by Gareth Evans 2011 martial-arts hit THE RAID, the hotly anticipated MMA thriller RUSSIAN RAID is a rapid-fire action tour de force, featuring ground-breaking techniques in the world of martial-arts filming and editing.

Nikita, a former Russian Spetsnaz operative, is hired to neutralize the large private security force at a local factory by his shady employer. But Nikita and his group of highly trained fighters get more than they bargained for when it turns out the factory is actually owned by a dangerous warlord connected to the Russian military. By the time the 'hostile takeover' is complete, Nikita reveals that he has orchestrated his own secret mission to take personal revenge on the most dangerous man in Russia.

Marking the directorial debut of Denis Kryuchkov, the film s cast is led by Ivan Kotic and includes some of the best-known MMA fighters in Russia. Powerlifting world record holder Kirill Sarychev and world heavyweight kickboxing champion Vladimir Mineev also star.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Eureka Blu-ray (March 2021): Eureka have transferred Denis Kryuchkov's Russian Raid to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate and looks.... amazing in 1080P. It was shot on HD in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio and is a testament to how far that this production format has come - there was no flaring, nor significant blurring in-motion and it was as sharp as a tack. It's not perfect but is crystal clear and super-tight - the detail is impressive to say the least. Predictably no blemishes. Excellent HD video presentation.

On their Blu-ray, Eureka use a linear PCM stereo track (16-bit) in the original Russian language. I can't find any credited score but there is some music supporting the endless aggressive action which carries mucho bass. It sounds very strong - supportive of the pristine video. Eureka offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Eureka Blu-ray offers no extras. This is a truly bare-bones disc.

I think whatever you may be expecting from Denis Kryuchkov's Russian Raid may be totally accurate.  As well as having Powerlifting world record holder Kirill Sarychev and world heavyweight kickboxing champion Vladimir Mineev the film is stacked with these mean-looking eastern European dudes. It's, actually, like an exaggerated MMA night. It's probably better than given credit (Plot-wise) - but definitely appeals to a certain crowd. There are so many hand-to-hand conflicts to count - not bad choreography at all.  If you are in the mood the bare-bones Eureka Blu-ray may impress you. It wasn't that bad...
