THE PEAK! THE DREAM! THE ULTIMATE TEST! The adventure of a lifetime begins. Featuring breathtaking surfing action and some of the most dangerous waves on Earth, North Shore is an adrenaline-powered look into the high-performance sport of big wave surfing. Rick Kane (Matt Adler, Teen Wolf) is a teenage surf champion from Arizona who dreams of conquering the legendary waves off Oahu s North Shore. When he finally makes it to Hawaii, he learns the harsh reality of life on the beach: the waves are tough and the locals are even tougher. But with help from a surfing guru (Gregory Harrison, Razorback) and the love and support of a local girl (Nia Peeples, DeepStar Six), Rick conquers his fears, gains the respect of his adversaries and discovers the real secret to mastering the powerful waves of this island paradise. North Shore captures the essence of surfing life and the harmony that can exist between a surfer and the massive ocean waves. Also featuring appearances by wave legends Gerry Lopez and Laird Hamilton and World Champions Shaun Tomson, Derek Ho and Mark Occhilupo.

***

After learning how to surf by using the local wave tanks, Arizona resident Rick uses his winnings from a recent contest to fly to Hawaii and try to make a living for himself as a professional wave rider.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (March 2021): Kino Lorber brings William Phelps' surf movie "North Shore" to Blu-ray, on a dual-layered disc with a handful of bonus features. The 1.85:1 film was shot in Super 16mm before being blown up to 35mm for its theatrical run. This means that despite an admirable bitrate, the picture has a thick grain throughout the running time. Detail therefore looks a tad undefined, lacking sharpness and clarity. The film's look however does have a film-like texture thanks to said grain. Contrast is mediocre, with darker scenes showing a moderate to low amount of complexity to the black levels and shadows. Not a terrible transfer by any means, most faults would be due to the budgetary constraints of shooting in 16mm.

Kino Lorber's
Blu-ray release of "North Shore" features a single audio option, a 16-bit DTS-HD Master audio. The track sounds rather flat, though dialogue is intelligible. Music is thanks to Richard Stone, with a soundtrack featuring a number by star Nia Peeples as well as tunes by Chris Isaak, Killing Joke, Journey, and Pseudo Echo. There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'A' Blu-ray from Kino.

Kino Lorber has included an audio commentary featuring director William Phelps and executive producer Randal Kleiser. Kleiser discusses the impetus for the film with the realization (after attending Blake Edwards' premiere of "That's Life") that he could make a movie with friends and family near his north shore home. Director Phelps and Kleiser discuss the filming, casting, and general construction of "North Shore", fans will definitely want to give this track a listen, though the average viewer may wish to skip. "North Shore Unscripted: Talking at Home with the Director and Cast" begins with star Matt Adler talking about filming in Hawaii and getting to surf with some of his idols. Actor Gregory Harrison then joins in, also talking about what a great shoot the film was. Nia Peeples as well as actors/surfers John Philbin, Gerry Lopez, Laird Hamilton then make an appearance. The 28-minute featurette ends with director William Phelps and executive producer Randal Kleiser discussing the making of the film. A few deleted scenes and an alternate ending are included on this
Blu-ray, though they take up only 5-minutes or thereabouts. The film's trailer and two other trailers round out Kino's Blu-ray disc.

"North Shore" will be familiar to surfing fans, while it's no "The Endless Summer" or "Point Break", there is still a lot of fun to be had, and the cast features numerous surfing legends. Kudos to Kino for including the commentary and interviews/deleted scenes on their
Blu-ray. Recommended to those curious.
