Directed by Arthur Barron
USA 1973

Jeremy loves horses, New York, basketball, the cello... and Susan, the new girl at school. Before they teamed in the hit film Ode to Billy Joe, Robby Benson and Glynnis O'Connor gained fame in this honest and moving tale of first love in "Fun City"-era New York. Benson (Harry and Son and One on One) is Jeremy Jones, a shy teenager who excels in all areas of his life save for romance. After a brief encounter with dance student Susan Rollins (O'Connor, TV's The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and Baby Blue Marine) at school, Jeremy is smitten and suddenly everything else in the world seems inconsequential in comparison. All he can think of is winning Susan's heart. But, as he soon learns, new relationships can be as fleeting as they are exhilarating.

This "BIG 'little' movie" (The New York Times) would win "Best First Film" at Cannes for its writer-director Arthur Barron (Brothers). Barron and director of photography Paul Goldsmith's (Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps) backgrounds in documentary filmmaking lend the film a gritty and realistic feel, befitting its urban locations. The songs and score by Lee Holdridge (Splash and The Beastmaster) and Joseph Brooks (You Light Up My Life,) some of which are sung by the stars themselves, amplify the story's tenderness and sensitivity. Shot with hand-held 16mm cameras, Jeremy has an uncommon authenticity and immediacy. Now restored for Blu-ray from its 35mm CRI, these qualities can be appreciated in a way they have not been since the film premiered in 1973.

Jeremy Jones is learning cello at an arts school in New York. At school he spots Susan Rollins, who practices for a ballet audition, and he falls in love on first sight. He's very diffident in nearing her, so he gets some help of his experienced friend Ralph. Susan's first impression isn't great, until she hears him play his cello. The movie paints a quiet image of him winning her heart and the development of their relationship.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Fun City Editions Blu-ray (April 2020): Fun City Editions have transferred Arthur Barron's Jeremy to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "New 2K restoration from its 35mm color reversal internegative". Originally shot on 16mm, the 1080P image is soaked in heavy texture - no glossy, tight image here - and it is very appealing and consistent. the colors are very deep and rich (notable blues and reds) and the film is housed on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio.

NOTE: We have added 50 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Fun City Editions use a DTS-HD Master dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. There aren't many effects with only the cello and other music impacting externally on the film viewing. The score is credited to Lee Holdridge - who has done a ton of TV movies since - here we get his 'Jeremy theme' sung by Glynnis O'Connor and Joseph Brooks' "The Hourglass Song" sung by Robby Benson. The audio is as imperfect as the production limitations would allow - but dialogue is audible and the music quite pleasing via the lossless. Fun City Editions offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray.

The Fun City Editions Blu-ray offers a new commentary by Kat Ellinger and Mike McPadden who discuss Benson, the sensitivity of his character, how is career had evolved, the off-camera romance with Glynnis O'Connor, the wonderful cinematography of Paul Goldsmith, how Jeremy is so different from similar teen movies where the protagonist is a bit geeky, cerebral and artistic, this arriving in Hollywood's new age, the strong reception at Cannes and much more. Before the film we get a brief introduction by Glynnis O'Connor and as supplements, a 21-minute A conversation with Robby Benson and O'Connor sharing memories of the film made almost 50-years ago. They remain classy and engaging. Fun City include an 8-minute new video essay, "A Phantom of Delight," by filmmaker Chris O'Neill, an episode of 'Trailers from Hell' commentary by Larry Karaszewski and an image gallery. The package has a 12-page liner notes booklet with an excellent new essay by film critic Bill Ackerman entitled "First Love in Fun City" discussing influences like Love Story made two year's previous as well as Danny Peary's championing of Jeremy. Plus there is a reversible sleeve included.

On the surface Jeremy could be dismissed as an 'After School Special' that pushes the envelope but looking deeper this was a bold teenage love story, unique in its characterizations, exporting themes sharing universal feels of awkwardness and low confidence, trust and innocence - a brilliantly underplayed film of maturity and the depth of feelings imbued by your first love. Jeremy was a great choice for another Fun City Edition Blu-ray (the first two being Alphabet City and I Start Counting.) This is a rare kind of a film and the commentary, visual essay, interviews and booklet give it immense value. Very strongly recommended!
