(aka "The Risk")

Directed by John and Roy Boulting
UK 1960

Peter Cushing stars as the head of a research team steamrollered into silence by officialdom in this Cold War thriller from the Boulting Brothers. Co-starring Tony Britton, Virginia Maskell, Ian Bannen and a wealth of British character actors, Suspect is featured here as a brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

When he and his research team discover a cure for both typhus and bubonic plague, Professor Sewell is appalled to find their results gagged under the Official Secrets Act. Conflict is immediate the research team want their findings to benefit mankind, but officialdom are convinced that, in the wrong hands, it could be used as a weapon of war!

***

A government team researching cures for plague find their results put on the Official Secrets list. One of their number is so incensed by this that he lets the maimed and jealous companion of a female colleague draw him into what, technically, could be a treasonable act.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (March 2021): Network have transferred the Boulting Brother's Suspect to Blu-ray. It is cited as a "brand-new High Definition remaster from original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio". The 1.66:1 1080P looked pleasing on my system from an obvious well-maintained source. Not abundant contrast layering but enough to export some depth. There isn't a lot of grain texture but consistent detail. A watchable image that is clean and it is simultaneously being released on DVD from Network.

NOTE: We have added 42 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Network use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. There is no credited score but stock music supports the film and dialogue is clean and clear. Network offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Network Blu-ray offers only an image gallery and 'Campaign Book' PDF file in the root of the disc.

The Boulting Brother's Suspect has cold-war, morality and political themes plus it's a good crime-drama-thriller. It's a solid British cast with recognizable support from Peter Cushing, Donald Pleasence, Ian Bannen - leads Tony Britton and Virginia Maskell and you can even see Spike Milligan in a minor role. They can carry the film very well. I thought it was shot effectively and an enjoyable director-brother effort from 1960 (not at the level of John Boulting's Brighton Rock but adept and entertaining.) The Network Blu-ray is their typical pragmatic bare-bones offering but worthwhile to see the film. Those keen on Cushing and British Noir-leaning thrillers of the era should investigate.
