(aka "Brain Slasher")

Directed by Steve Barnett
USA 1991

In the future, life will be a dream. And reality a nightmare.

In a post-apocalyptic world, one woman (Marta Alicia) relies on computer fantasies to entertain herself, but a glitch sends her to a far-off wasteland to deal with monsters called Crawlers. She is saved by a young rebel (Bruce Campbell; the Evil Dead franchise, Bubba Ho-Tep), but the pair are later captured and brought underground by the Crawlers. There, an overlord called the Seer (Angus Scrimm; the Phantasm series) presides over the kingdom and tries to make life miserable for his captives.

The first film produced as part of the Fangoria Films label, Mindwarpis a gore-filled sci-fi horror classic of the early 90s, and Eureka Classics is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

***

In post-apocalyptic 2037, Judy rebels against the AI-ruled utopia where people live in a happy VR simulation. She's exiled to a post-nuclear wasteland where she meets drifter Stover. Mutated cannibals capture them for their leader Seer.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Eureka Blu-ray (February 2021): Eureka have transferred Steve Barnett's Mindwarp to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It's com e out in two Blu-ray editions in the US but we have neither to compare. It looks like that fallible late 80's film stock with plenty of noisy-looking grain. It is generally not crisp and has a brown-earthy hue. Both may be a function of the original appearance. It doesn't venture to the heights of the format.

On their Blu-ray, Eureka use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. The film has some wonky audio effects and a score by Mark Governor. It is exported unremarkably via the uncompressed transfer. Eureka offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Eureka Blu-ray offers an interview that runs to the film with Tony Timpone, former longtime editor of Fangoria Magazine, the Fangoria Films label is discussed. Mindwarp was the first of three films produced by Fangoria (the other two being Children of the Night in 1991 and Severed Ties in 1992.) The goal of financing one feature film a year. Timpone shed plenty of light with anecdotes and details. It's interesting in the context of the label. Also included are Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors 1990 footage from the horror convention, with Bruce Campbell for over 3/4 of an hour and Angus Srimm for over 20-minutes in attendance after recently filming Mindwarp. There is a trailer and the package has reversible sleeve artwork featuring original poster artwork for both the original US release, and the international Brain Slasher artwork plus a limited-edition collector's booklet featuring a new essay by film scholar and author Craig Ian Mann; and a reprinted article from Fangoria sister publication, Gorezone - both that booklet and the limited-edition O-card slipcase have a first print run of 2000 copies.

Well, you can't like everything. I do appreciate Apocalypse films... but Mindwarp isn't my cup-of-tea. I found the goofy futurism pretty lame, I enjoyed Bruce Campbell but overall it feels very dated. Although there may be extensive nostalgia value and it being Fangoria Films label first, of 3, efforts. The Eureka Blu-ray seems to have gone the extra mile in terms of extras and a max'ed out a/v presentation.
