Directed by Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen
USA 2002

Success Scandal Sex Tragedy Infamy... and that’s just the first reel! Rules are made to be broken. And Robert Evans has broken them all. He was the first actor to ever run a major Hollywood studio. In a decade he took it from worst to first. Voted the world’s most eligible bachelor, he was quintessential Hollywood royalty. In 1979, he had $11 million. With one mistake he spiraled south from legend to leper. In 1989, his worth was $37. Did he come back? Like a phoenix. His saga should inspire the most cynical. To quote Evans, “All my life I’ve lived on the edge and many times it came back to bite me. Was it worth it? You bet your a$$ it was.” His outrageous story proves that, at times, fact is far stranger than fiction. Directed by Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen; screen adaptation by Morgen, based on the book by Robert Evans.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2021): Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen's "The Kid Stays in the Picture" arrives on Blu-ray thanks to the folks at Kino Lorber. The 1.85:1 1080p image benefits from a maxed out bitrate, with the film itself taking up a whopping 31GB on a dual-layered Blu-ray. Now, given that the film consists mainly of assembled footage and overlaying pictures (like a slideshow), the image quality is only as good as the source material being conveyed at any given moment. Evans' narration drives the film, with the occasional slow motion panning across his empty estate for effect. A fine Blu-ray transfer from Kino.

Kino's
Blu-ray of Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgan's "The Kid Stays in the Picture" features not one, but two audio track options (three if you include the commentary). The first option is a 16-bit DTS-HD Master audio track, that is quite modest in the surround channels. The 16-bit 2.0 DTS-HD Master audio track seems a bit more concise and forward, given that the narration from Evans is the star of the show. Much like the image being dependent on what older footage is being shown, so is the audio. We hear bits of Krzysztof Komeda's score from "Rosemary's Baby", Francis Lai's score from "Love Story", etc. The main menu features Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do". There are optional English subtitles on this Region 'A' Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.

Commentary begins with producer / directors Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgan introducing the picture, followed by the two taking turns speaking (instead of talking over each other). The track begins with Morgan revealing the impetus of the picture; after a meeting with Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter (who had the idea of doing a documentary version of Robert Evans' book-on-tape "The Kid Stays in the Picture"), the duo changed their original intentions of doing a more cinema verite style documentary on Bob, in his older years. What follows is an engaging and informative track that fans of Evan's career (and sordid personal life) will surely enjoy. Kino has also included a bunch of footage accessible from the bonus features section of the menu. This footage consists of red carpet and awards show interviews (with Bob and others) as well as talk show footage. Some big names make appearances here such as Dick Clark, Larry King, and even Matthew McConneghey. These bits run anywhere from a minute to 15-minutes long. Also here are some outtakes with Dustin Hoffman hamming it up on various sets. Trailers for "The Kid Stays in the Picture" and "Filmworker'' round out the
Blu-ray from Kino.

I first heard of Robert Evans’ memoir years ago, after hearing Patton Oswalt's hilarious bit about Evan's self-narrated book-on-tape (if you haven't heard this, you must find Oswalt's 2004 stand-up album 'Feelin' kinda Patton'). After tracking down the book-on-tape (or book-on-CD rather) I realized that Evans life was even more grandiose and hedonistic than I first believed. Like the book-on-tape, the documentary also utilizes Evans narration, though unfortunately in a truncated feature-length format which leaves out some incredible tangents. The
Blu-ray from Kino seems to be a faithful transfer of the film, which consists almost solely of footage from the past (with the rare present day footage consisting of Shining-like slow tracking shots). Fans of the autobiography will not see much new here, with the film compressing his life into a smaller package. Still would recommend the Blu-ray to those that are curious.
