Directed by Gerald Thomas
UK 1959

A precocious teenage daughter writes a steamy bestseller featuring fictionalised versions of her family and friends, turning their quiet suburban life upside down in the process when their neighbours believe that the book's contents are true!

Ted Ray, Jean Kent, Leslie Phillips and Joan Sims star in this hilarious comedy from the quintessential Carry On team of writer Norman Hudis, producer Peter Rogers and Director Gerald Thomas. Based on the hit West End comedy Book of the Month, Please Turn Over is featured here as a High Definition remaster from original film elements in its theatrically exhibited aspect ratio.

***

The orderly suburban life of a 1950's English town is turned on its head when the teenaged daughter of one of the residents writes a steamy bestseller featuring characters obviously based on the local population.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Network Blu-ray (January 2021): Network have transferred Gerald Thomas's late 50's Brit comedy Please Turn Over to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "High Definition remaster from original film elements in its theatrically exhibited aspect ratio". It's one of the glossiest 1080P images I've ever seen. That often indicates some DNR but there is grain here - or at least noisy grain when I zoom in. The image quality is remarkably crisp - massive amount of depth and high detail buoyed by effective contrast. I can't identify digitalization but it just looks so unnaturally good - like every shot is a 8X10 glossy. It looks amazingly tight and very impressive on my system. I suspect that the print must have been in great condition.

On their Blu-ray, Network use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. No aggressive effects and clear dialogue plus a bouncy score by Bruce Montgomery - who had composed for a number of Carry On films. All good on the audio front. Network offer optional English subtitles (see sample below) on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Network Blu-ray offers an interview with actor Tim Seeley (who played Robert Hughes - 'authoress' Jo Halliday's boyfriend). He is in his mid 80s and talked about his career and Please Turn Over for over 1/4 hour. There is a trailer and an image gallery and the root of the disc has a PDF of the Pressbook.

Gerald Thomas's Please Turn Over is sexy fun - well, as far as 1959 could take it. I'd say its above average with the remarkable HD presentation. Julia Lockwood (who played Jo Halliday) was playing a 17-year old - but was actually 18 in real life and the daughter of glamorous British film star Margaret Lockwood from Carol Reed's Night Train to Munich and The Stars Look Down, Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes, The Man in Grey and the Hammer film Captain Clegg (Night Creatures.) . Julie glows onscreen - bright eyes - extremely attractive. Aside from this film she did mostly TV shows.  Anyway - I liked Please Turn Over more than I expected and it was a visual treat to watch it on the Network Blu-ray. It's like a classy Carry On with some of those regulars; Leslie Phillips, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey plus the always enjoyable Lionel Jeffries (First Men in the Moon.) Recommended!
