Directed by Jens Dahl
Denmark 2020

Women are being abducted for bio-hacking experiments. Can Mia unravel the nightmare, or will she become the next test subject?

A renowned health supplement company, run by a ruthless businesswoman (Signe Egholm Olsen), is selecting and abducting young women as part of an experiment bio-hacking babies DNA to enable her clients to reverse the ageing process. When Mia (Sara Hjort Ditlevsen, Borgman) goes to investigate, she finds herself trapped, branded and tortured in a grim underground facility. Familiar faces start to appear, and she realizes that she is not alone in this. Can she somehow find inner strength and escape from the nightmare?

Drawing comparisons to the New French Extreme films of the early 2000s, Breeder is a brutal modernist survival horror directed by Pusher screenwriter Jens Dahl.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Eureka (Montage Pictures) Blu-ray (January 2021): Eureka have transferred Jens Dahl's Danish horror/thriller Breeder to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. Breeder looks to have been shot on HD and the image quality reflects a competent, professionally shot film in that format. There is some indoor green-ish hues or red lighting. Occasional tight detail, more hazy in-motion and a consistent, clean 1080P presentation. No issues.

NOTE: We have added 68 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Eureka (Montage Pictures) use a linear PCM stereo track (16-bit) in the original Danish language. There are plenty of effects (violence and other torture) and a tension-elevating score by Peter Kyed (Valhalla Rising) and Peter Peter (only film composure credit), supporting the film with further bass intensity. Eureka (Montage Pictures) offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Eureka (Montage Pictures) Blu-ray offers a 10-minute interview with director Jens Dahl and screenwriter Sissel Dalsgaard Thomsen where they talk of the evolution of the film and projection of its themes. Included in the package is a collector's booklet featuring a new essay by film historian Kat Ellinger and the disc comes housed with a limited edition O-card Slipcase - see below (First Print Run of 2000 Copies Only).

I'm going to defend Jens Dahl's Breeder since many have dismissed it. I'm not sure if I am right but this really felt like it attempted a Grindhouse homage to me - which came out of nowhere. It looks very sedate in the first 1/2 hour or so - building suspicion. Not only goes it go extreme and intense but almost in a comical way with the finale. I loved that aspect. Shocking? yes...but with a 70's genre feel, imo. I liked it - more upon reflection. I was very happy seeing it via the Eureka (Montage Pictures) Blu-ray. The filmmaker's interview, and Kat's essay add value as does the cool slipcase packaging. I think this is much better than its being given credit for... but it is very harsh with extreme violence against women - ultra sensitive viewers be forewarned.
