(aka "Geronimo: An American Legend")

Directed by Walter Hill
USA 1993

Geronimo: An American Legend recounts the proud history of the famous Apache warrior who refused to accept the destruction of his people and, through his resistance and bravery, earned the respect of those he fought against.

Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans) gives a dignified central performance as the eponymous Native American hero and is ably supported by Gene Hackman (Cisco Pike), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys), Robert Duvall (Badge 373) and, in an early role, Matt Damon, who all play his adversaries in the US cavalry.

Unjustly neglected upon its original release, Geronimo benefits from John Milius and Larry Gross’s respectful, considered screenplay which is elevated by the epic sweep of Walter Hill’s direction. A visually stunning film that beautifully captures the vastness of the frontier landscape, Hill’s film is given extra poignancy by Ry Cooder’s moving score.

***

The Apache Indians have reluctantly agreed to settle on a US Government approved reservation. Not all the Apaches are able to adapt to the life of corn farmers. One in particular, Geronimo, is restless. Pushed over the edge by broken promises and necessary actions by the government, Geronimo and thirty or so other warriors form an attack team which humiliates the government by evading capture, while reclaiming what is rightfully theirs.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator Blu-ray (January 2021): Indicator have transferred Walter Hill's gorgeous western Geronimo: An American Legend to Blu-ray. It is such a beautiful film shot in Arizona and Utah - the vistas are stunning - rich earthy colors; deep reds, browns and orange landscapes proliferate the strong HD visuals. As per usual from Indicator, this is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It looks sweet on my system. I thought I saw minor digitalization but couldn't definitively identify it. It's one of the most impressive 1080P images I've seen in a long while.

NOTE: We have added 54 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Indicator use a DTS-HD Master offered in both 2.0 channel stereo and a robust 5.1 surround lossless track. It is in the original English and Apache languages. The film's music is notable for the score by Ry Cooder (The Border, The End of Violence, Southern Comfort, Paris Texas, Streets of Fire, The Long Riders) . Indicator offer optional English (SDH), original theatrical and 'standard presentation' subtitles options on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.  On the subtitle menus it states: "On its original theatrical release, prints of Geronimo: An American Legend included optically printed subtitles translating the Chiricahua dialogue. These subtitles were written in a distinctive typeface, selected purposely for the film. The above options allow the viewer to experience the film with these subtitles as they were originally presented or to watch with a more neutral subtitle typeface."

The Indicator Blu-ray offers a new audio commentary with western experts C. Courtney Joyner and Henry Parke discuss the ambitious nature of the production, the cinematography of Lloyd Ahern II, Hill's return to the Western, since 1980's The Long Riders, Hackman's return to the genre, John Milius' excellent script, the performances of Damon, Patric and Duvall - the effective direction of Hill etc.. It covers many specifics and is well worth the indulgence. Impressive. There is a new 24-minute interview with Walter Hill who revisits the production of his epic western entitled "The Old Days Are Gone". Also new (2021), Wes Studi recalls how he embodied the famous Apache warrior for a dozen minutes entitled "I Have Seen My Power". "Impressions of the West" - yet another new video piece - has multi-instrumentalist Ry Cooder remembering the challenges and achievements of composing the film’s score. It runs shy of 13-minutes. We get the 1995 1 1/4 hour The Guardian Interview with Ry Cooder. It is a wide-ranging onstage interview with the guitar legend, conducted by film critic Jonathan Romney, filmed at the National Film Theatre, London. ‘Geronimo’ présenté par Bertrand Tavernier is 36-minutes from 2016 - an in-depth appreciation of the film by the esteemed French filmmaker. Geronimo Goes to Hollywood was filmed in 2020 and has Kim Newman, the author of Wild West Movies, discusses the many film portrayals of the fearless Native American for 18-minutes. Geronimo’s Last Raid is a new remaster of the early, 1912, silent western, presented with an optional new score by the band 'Peninsula' and runs 17-minutes. Fascinating. There is an original theatrical trailer and image gallery of promotional and publicity materials and the package has a limited edition exclusive 40-page booklet with a new essay by Omar Ahmed, extracts from screenwriter Larry Gross’ shooting diary, an overview of contemporary critical responses, and film credits.

Walter Hill's Geronimo is a rich, visual western filled with star performances from Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Matt Damon, Jason Patric and, of course, Wes Studi - brilliantly stoic and commanding as the titular Geronimo. This is somewhat of an underrated masterpiece. The edifying portrayal of the Chiricahua Apache is fascinating. The first scene involving them is awe-inspiring. Indicator have outdone themselves with a totally stacked Blu-ray package. They are alone in creating the very best of this format. Our highest recommendation!
