Directed by David Mamet
USA UK 1999

David Mamet’s brilliant adaptation of The Winslow Boy is a rich and complex telling of the British classic, brought to life by a superior ensemble of talent. The story follows the lives of the Winslows, a banker’s family living in turn-of-the-century London, as they fight to prove the innocence of their youngest son accused of theft.

***

Early 20th century England: while toasting his daughter Catherine's engagement, Arthur Winslow learns the royal naval academy expelled his 14-year-old son, Ronnie, for stealing five shillings. Father asks son if it is true; when the lad denies it, Arthur risks fortune, health, domestic peace, and Catherine's prospects to pursue justice.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Imprint Blu-ray (December 2020): Imprint have transferred David Mamet's 1999 The Winslow Boy to Blu-ray. in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio (like the DVD.) The 1080P is pretty sweet showing both fine grain and a touch of gloss. It can look a bit think is spots but never crosses the line exporting edge-enhancement. Colors are rich (green foliage and maroons) and lines are tight. This is a beautifully shot film that looks impressive in HD... well ahead of SD. I was pleased. It's on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate.

NOTE: We have added 62 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, Imprint use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. It clean without aggressive effects. The score is by Alaric Jans (Mamet's House of Games and Homicide) subtly adding to the viewing experience by supporting the film's precise pacing. Imprint offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Imprint Blu-ray carries over the 2007 DVD commentary with director/screenwriter David Mamet and cast members, Jeremy Northam, Nigel Hawthorne and Rebecca Pidgeon. It's still very interesting and fun with Mamet discussing Terence Rattigan's play, describing on-screen spatial relationships, camera angles, Hitchcock, Wilder, Mike Nichols, Jean Renoir. There is a lot for film fans to appreciate. There is also a standard 'making of' featurette and a trailer. The slipcase is a limited edition for the first 1500 copies.

A wonderful and re-watchable film buoyed by Mamet's concise dialogue and the gorgeous art direction (Trisha Edwards) and costume design (Consolata Boyle.) The Winslow Boy is brilliantly realized with touches like the sexual tension between Jeremy Northam and Rebecca Pidgeon - subtle but evident. In fact all performances are strong - notably Ronnie Winslow's parents played by Gemma Jones and distinguished Nigel Hawthorne. I'd love to see the Anthony Asquith 1948 film version.  I really enjoyed seeing David Mamet's The Winslow Boy again - especially with the significant a/v upgrade of the Imprint Blu-ray. The Mamet etc. commentary has additional value. Strongly recommended!
