Love Express. The Disappearance of Walerian Borowczyk - The rise and fall of the legendary cult filmmaker.

How does a filmmaker go from creating cutting-edge work and competing in Cannes to being labeled a failed erotic filmmaker? The debut documentary feature from Polish critic and academic Kuba Mikurda investigates the work of Walerian Borowczyk, a director of unparalleled creativity and sensitivity, revered in the 1970s for creations including GOTO, ISLAND OF LOVE, THE BEAST, and IMMORAL TALES. The film interviews his closest collaborators, filmmakers, and leading intellectuals who put his work into perspective, including Terry Gilliam, Bertrand Bonello, Neil Jordan, Patrice Leconte, Slavoj Zizek, and the late Andrzej Wajda.

ADDITION: Altered Innocence Blu-ray (April 2020): Altered Innocence have transferred Kuba Mikurda's Love Express. The Disappearance of Walerian Borowczyk to Blu-ray. It is in 1080i as it was filmed with mostly static screen of talking heads and some film footage. It's on a single-layered disc with a high bitrate and looks fine in HD.

On their Blu-ray, Altered Innocence use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original French, English, Polish and Italian languages. It's a documentary and no separations are evident and it has a sparsely used score credited to Stefan Wesolowski (his first film composure credit.) Dialogue is clear and audible and there are the options of English or English (SDH) subtitles on Altered Innocence's Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Altered Innocence Blu-ray offers about 25-minutes of interview outtakes with Terry Gilliam, Peter Bradshaw, Neil Jordan and Slavoj Ilia. There is a theatrical trailer and some other Altered Innocence trailers.

Walerian Borowczyk passed away in 2006 at 82-years old. This fascinating documentary details his short animated film career in the 1950s, his move to France in the1960s and live-action cinema, and the controversial explicit content where he continued to push the envelope with his filmmaking career being forgotten by directing Emmanuelle 5 as his second last film. Love Express. The Disappearance of Walerian Borowczyk is about as interesting as it gets considering he was a relatively well-known contributor to art-house cinema - and we have reviewed more than a 1/2 dozen of his films on disc.
"Eroticism, sex, is one of the most moral parts of life. Eroticism does not kill, exterminate, encourage evil, lead to crime. On the contrary, it makes people gentler, brings joy, gives fulfillment, leads to selfless pleasure." - Walerian Borowczyk
