Test Tube Babies (1948)                       Guilty Parents (1934)

The seventh volume in the series Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture addresses the prickly problems of parenting. In Test Tube Babies, Cathy (Dorothy Duke) and George (William Thomason) seem like the perfect postwar American couple, but a medical deficiency deprives them of the children that will complete their happy home. Facing a future of childless debauchery (represented by an especially raucous adults-only house party, complete with female wrestling), they pay a visit to a fertility specialist, portrayed by deadpan exploitation legend Timothy Farrell, who proposes an unorthodox solution to their problems. J.D. Kendis’s Guilty Parents is one of the better-produced incarnations of the good-girl-gone-wrong cautionary tale, highlighted by a game of silhouette strip-tease at the wayward teens’ favorite roadhouse.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (September 2020): Like Kino's other 'Forbidden Fruit' Blu-rays; Mom and Dad. (Forbidden Fruit: Golden Exploitation Picture Volume 1,) Reefer Madness / Sex Madness (Volume 2,)  Unashamed / Elysia (Volume 3,)  Marihuana / Narcotic (Volume 4,) and Tomorrow's Children / Child Bride (Volume 5.) the image quality of Test Tube Babies / Guilty Parents has imperfections with light to moderate damage but both are very watchable in terms of the 1080P. The 'younger' film, Test Tube Babies, looks much better - very clear at times with decently-layered contrast and a touch of gloss - it may, actually, have some edge-enhancement. There are some frame-specific speckles and marks. Guilty Parents is 14-years it's senior and is softer with more flagrant damage (see samples below), but is the better film (if you want 'better'.)

On their Blu-ray, Kino use a linear PCM mono tracks (16-bit) in the original English language for both films. It's imperfect but serviceable with a few drop-outs. Kino offer optional English subtitles for both features on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Kino Blu-ray includes an audio commentary on Test Tube Babies by Eric Schaefer, author of Bold! Daring! Shocking True! A History of Exploitation Films, 1919-1959 - a perfect person to delve into this genre of castigating sexual behavior, drug use while still exploiting it for cinematic box-office gain. He's a pleasure to listen to exposing details of these productions from the 'square-up' text screen to the conclusion. He discusses the tension between education and titillation explaining exactly what an 'exploitation' film was - usually made outside of the major studio etc.. Also included is a short 1951 a marital education film entitled 'Sex and Romance' - it is in poor shape with plenty of vertical scratches. The ending calls it a 'Federate Film Production' by Gordon Schndler. There is also an 'Alternate Title Sequence' and trailer for Test Tube Babies.

Test Tube Babies is wild - a courtship, seemingly happy marriage and, before you know it, the bored wife is hosting sex parties while the husband is at work!... eventually cured of their immorality by having a baby - the only way they can - hence the title. It has all the kitsch and bizarreness appeal that you could hope for. Guilty Parents is actually quite good - far more cohesive - kind of a quasi-crime, almost noirish angle, film about a young girl trying to get ahead, but a poor decision haunts her - the taboo references are rife; scantily glad gals (legs, garters), lots of dancing etc.. The Kino Blu-ray is like the others in the 'Forbidden Fruit' series; both fun and fascinating. The commentary has excellent value and I am enjoying the brazenness of this 'vintage' cinema and learning about the niche of filmmakers involved. Recommended to any who want to indulge in something very different. There's a 'pushing-boundaries' appeal that touches 'Pre-code' although these don't qualify for that label.
