Directed by Mario Zampi
UK 1960
Based on the enormously popular television and radio sitcom Whack-O!, this
uproarious comedy stars Jimmy Edwards in his signature role as a devious,
cane-brandishing headmaster. Co-scripted by Michael Pertwee and Whack-O! writers
Frank Muir and Denis Norden, Bottoms Up! is featured here as a brand-new High
Definition remaster from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical
aspect ratio. *** An incompetent boarding school headmaster, Professor Jim Edwards, devises a bizarre plot to raise the profile of his boarding school, and thus save his job, by passing off his bookie's son as a Middle Eastern prince. The headmaster's madcap scheme is further complicated when an official from the Foreign Office arrives and announces that a real prince is to be placed under Edwards supervision, not due to the schools lofty reputation, but that a gang of kidnappers are unlikely to look for the regal child there. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Network use a linear PCM dual-mono track (16-bit) in the
original English language. There are a few aggressive effects that don't
carry any weight. The score is by
Stanley Black (Blood
of the Vampire, The
Long and the Short and the Tall,
Happy
Ever After, Valentino,
The
Day the Earth Caught Fire,
War-Gods of the Deep, 1960's Hammer film
Stop Me Before I Kill! etc.) sounding
fairly unremarkable in the uncompressed. Network offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'B'
Blu-ray.
The Network
Blu-ray
Mario Zampi (Happy
Ever After) directed Bottoms Up!
and is advertised via a couple of the film's posters, and the title
itself I suppose, as a quasi-sex-comedy - which it definitely is not.
But it is not a bad 'British boarding school' / 'schoolmaster' comedy nonetheless. It's
written by, Michael Pertwee, the elder brother of (one of the many) Dr. Whos (Jon Pertwee),
devoid of political-correctness ('caning') but has some very funny parts and
dialogue. It's not for everyone but those who get a kick out of some
outrageous family fun humor might consider indulging in Network's Blu-ray |
