(aka "Xiao quan guai zhao" or "Revenge of the Dragon" or "The Shadowman" or "Jackie Chan - Superfighter III" or "The Fearless Hyena")
Directed by Jackie Chan
Hong Kong 1979
In this directorial debut, Jackie plays Lung, a talented fighter but prefers to
spend his time loafing around and picking fights, despite orders from his
grandfather (James Tien) not to fight. Unknown to him, a brutal general (Yam Sai
Kun) has been slaughtering all the people from his grandfather’s clan. When the
general recognizes Lung’s style of kung fu during one of his street fights, he
hunts down Lung’s grandfather and kills him. |

On their
Blu-ray,
88 Films use a DTS-HD Master track (16-bit) in the original Cantonese
mono, the alternate Cantonese mono with Japanese "Crazy Monkey"
music cues (Crazy Monkey and Monkey Man performed by Dr.
Soup), the original English mono DUB and an English 5.1 mix DUB in
24-bit. The DUBs are not well-synced but authentic to the original.
Effects are abundant from snappy cracks of martial arts hand combat to
thuds and hollow taps of sticks. There is some strain in the higher end
but we hear this frequently from Hong Kong films. The score is credited
to Frankie Chan (Chungking
Express), sounding solid and pleasing in supporting the film. 88
Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B'
Blu-ray.
The 88 Films
Blu-ray
Jackie Chan's The Fearless Hyena
has a ton of long, acrobatic, fight scenes. It's both a funny and a
good action film. The dress-up stuff is a bit over-the-top but this is
an entertaining, early, Jackie flic that is worth a watch. The 88 Films Blu-ray
provides a strong presentation and the commentary has real value.
Recommended to fans. |
