(aka "Xiao quan guai zhao" or "Revenge of the Dragon" or "The Shadowman" or "Jackie Chan - Superfighter III" or "The Fearless Hyena")

Directed by Jackie Chan
Hong Kong 1979

In this directorial debut, Jackie plays Lung, a talented fighter but prefers to spend his time loafing around and picking fights, despite orders from his grandfather (James Tien) not to fight. Unknown to him, a brutal general (Yam Sai Kun) has been slaughtering all the people from his grandfather’s clan. When the general recognizes Lung’s style of kung fu during one of his street fights, he hunts down Lung’s grandfather and kills him.

A grieving Lung plans his vengeance and is aided by crippled kung fu master who imparts to him a new kind of “emotional kung fu”. Mentally and physically ready, Lung finally seeks out the wicked general to see justice done.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: 88 Films Blu-ray (August 2020): 88 Films have transferred Jackie Chan's The Fearless Hyena to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "NEW 2K RESTORATION from the Original 35mm Negative". This is one of the better looking films from this era - the new restoration is gorgeous. It is clean and super crisp - I suspect the source to have been in very strong condition. The 1080P image is very bright and there is plenty of depth.

NOTE: We have added 27 more large resolution Blu-ray captures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver Patrons HERE

On their Blu-ray, 88 Films use a DTS-HD Master track (16-bit) in the original Cantonese mono, the alternate Cantonese mono with Japanese "Crazy Monkey" music cues (Crazy Monkey and Monkey Man performed by Dr. Soup), the original English mono DUB and an English 5.1 mix DUB in 24-bit. The DUBs are not well-synced but authentic to the original. Effects are abundant from snappy cracks of martial arts hand combat to thuds and hollow taps of sticks. There is some strain in the higher end but we hear this frequently from Hong Kong films. The score is credited to Frankie Chan (Chungking Express), sounding solid and pleasing in supporting the film. 88 Films offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The 88 Films Blu-ray offers a new audio commentary by Hong Kong cinema experts Mike Leeder and Arne Venema who are very familiar with the Wuxia genre, Jackie (this his directorial debut - as 'Jacky Chan',) his nose size, stuntmen, many details of the production and the other performers, changes in the industry (Shaw etc.) plus much more. It's a pleasure to hear them export their knowledge with interesting back-stories and minute details. There is also a Hong Kong and Japanese trailers and a short Japanese TV commercial. The package has a reversible sleeve with alternative Hong Kong poster artwork and limited to the first run is a gloss O-Card slipcase with new artwork from R.P. “Kung Fu Bob” O’Brien and a limited Edition booklet by Andrew Staton featuring rare stills, posters, lobby cards, behind- the-scenes photos, production stills and more.

Jackie Chan's The Fearless Hyena has a ton of long, acrobatic, fight scenes. It's both a funny and a good action film. The dress-up stuff is a bit over-the-top but this is an entertaining, early, Jackie flic that is worth a watch. The 88 Films Blu-ray provides a strong presentation and the commentary has real value. Recommended to fans.
