(aka "Hate" or "Killer-Truck")

Directed by Dominique Goult
France 1980

We don’t know who he is, or where he comes from. Dressed in a white combination, he wanders the country roads on his bike. Fate leads it to a deep French village freshly marked by the death of a child, broken by a two-wheel. Very quickly, the stranger feels indifference, then contempt and soon the hatred of these villagers confined to their prejudices. Only Madeleine, single mother, agrees to come to help her. But all the men of the village, to the mayor, have found abroad their scapegoat.

Hate (Haine) is a reflection on intolerance, xenophobia and unchecked revenge, starring Klaus Kinski. By his side, we find the familiar faces of the French cinema of the 1970/80’s, among which Maria Schneider (The Last Tango in Paris), Evelyne Bouix and Katia Tchenko. Atypical work, allegorical, HAINE is presented as a world premiere in a fully restored version, on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Le Chat qui Fume Blu-ray (March 2020): Le Chat qui Fume have transferred Dominique Goult's Haine to Blu-ray. It is cited as being from a "2K RESTORATION MADE FROM THE ORIGINAL NEGATIVE". The 1.66:1 image is on a single-layered disc with a supportive bitrate. The 1080P quality is quite good - nice textures - a shade waxy in spots, the source print had strong density and it looks clean and consistent with true colors.

On their Blu-ray, Le Chat qui Fume offer DTS-HD Master 2.0 tracks (16-bit) in the option of both French and German languages. There are effects with modest depth and a score by Alain Jomy (The Little Thief), sounding clean without hiss or dropouts. NOTE: It is available as an isolated score option. Le Chat qui Fume offer optional English, French and German subtitle options on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Le Chat qui Fume Blu-ray extras have no English subtitles. Sur le tournage du Haine runs 1/2 hour and has input from Klaus Kinski and director Dominique Goult. There are some trailers and some 'on-set' footage. The package has some liner notes by Christophe Lemaire (French text). A second disc DVD is included.

Haine is intense. I liked the visual story-telling and small village atmosphere. There are some redeeming features although not a ton of them - I do appreciate how the story was realized. Le Chat qui Fume Blu-ray (and included DVD) are one of the few ways to see this harsh, forgotten, film from 40-years ago. It might be the only way to see it.
