(aka "Sons of Denmark")

Directed by Ulaa Salim
Denmark 2019

Denmark 2025. One year after a major bomb attack in Copenhagen radicalisation around the country has intensified and ethnic tensions are running high. The next parliamentary election is near, and the extremely nationalist political leader Martin Nordahl is set for a landslide victory. 19-year-old Zakaria gets involved in a radical organisation, where he forms a bond with Ali. The two men cannot agree with the current state of the country, which is turning on its own citizens because of their migration background, and decide to act. However, they are both just tools in the hands of people with power. As the men try to make their mark, their brotherhood will be tested and their actions will have grave consequences on their lives.

With hints of Martin Scorsese and Jacques Audiard, director Ulaa Salim taps into a political climate that will feel all too familiar for audiences across Europe. Sons Of Denmark is an ambitious film that marks Salim out as a talent to keep an eye on.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Eureka Entertainment Blu-ray (February 2020): Eureka Entertainment have transferred Ulaa Salim's Sons of Denmark to Blu-ray. It is on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The image quality is top-shelf - about as faithful as you would expect from such a robust 1080P transfer of a modern film. It's perfect with excellent detail in the darker areas of the frame. An excellent video image.

On their Blu-ray, Eureka Entertainment use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (16-bit) in the original Danish and Arabic. Gunshots sound like cannons in the uncompressed and bomb blasts are also impacting. I marveled at the score by composer Lawand Othman, with a very serene, classic, cathedral-like presence in the film with choir backgrounds. Beautiful irony to the film's violence. Eureka Entertainment offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray.

The Eureka Entertainment Blu-ray only has a theatrical trailer as a disc extra and the package contains a liner notes booklet featuring new writing on the film by writer Jason Wood; and an interview with director Ulaa Salim. This is dual-format and a second disc DVD is included.

Sons of Denmark is the debut feature of Danish director Ulaa Salim. It is quite violent and, in the beginning, exposes both sides of the charged political expression. It's extremely well-constructed but I was left confused - perhaps the less-judgmental tone was meant to convey and accomplish this. Yeah, man - it's all bad (terrorism, white-ring extremism and political corruption). I was keen to see it - especially on this stellar Blu-ray and think I need to revisit it again to get a bet handle on the meaning - perhaps we are all just pawns? This is usually an excellent sign to have the narrative weigh heavily after-the-fact. Very deep, thought-provoking world cinema. I look forward to more from Salim. Recommended!
