NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Anti-Worlds Releasing Blu-ray (January 2020): the new label 'Anti-Worlds Releasing' have transferred Isabella Eklöf's Holiday to Blu-ray. It is cited as being "Classified fully uncut by the BBFC". The 2.39:1 framed image is transferred on a dual-layered disc with a max'ed out bitrate. It looks very strong with many naturally lit scenes shot, predominantly on the 'Turkish Riviera'. Color are rich, bright and deep, contrast well-layered and the 1080P exports a consistent, clean and appealing image. On their Blu-ray, Anti-Worlds Releasing use a DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) in the original Danish language (with some French and English). There is some less-demonstrative separation and a score by the Danish film composer, sound designer and musician Martin Dirkov, adding some contemplative layers to the presentation with such tracks as Sinnerman, and Ostesangen. There is other music in the film by Morten Hemmingsen, Raske Penge, and Takykardia etc. that carries some depth. Anti-Worlds Releasing offer optional English subtitles and English (SDH) on their Region FREE Blu-ray. The Anti-Worlds Releasing Blu-ray includes On 'Holiday' a new 20-minute in-depth interview with writer-director Isabella Eklöf on the creation and production of her debut feature. There is a 1/2 hour Q&A with Isabella Eklöf from 2019 where the filmmaker in discussion with critic Lizzie Francke, recorded at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts. We get a short deleted scene, theatrical trailer and Eklöf's 2002 short documentary portrait of the acclaimed author and poet Willy Kyrklund. The package contains a limited edition (3,000 copies) exclusive 28-page booklet containing new writing on the film by Anna Bogutskaya, an interview with Isabella Eklöf by Addy Fong, and film credits. I found Holiday uncomfortable where I didn't fully embrace the denial fantasy of the Sascha character. This is obviously the intent of Isabella Eklöf's to maintain a tension that eventually explodes in a kind of unburdened satisfaction. I was always interested and watched with this unfold with anticipation. The Anti-Worlds Blu-ray is at a highly adept standard - a compelling, lesser-seen, film with a great presentation and revealing supplements. I'm very keen to see more from this new label and more from Eklöf. Recommended. |
