(aka "Leviatán" or "The Lord of the Dogs" or "The Bite")
Directed by Claudio Fragasso (as Clyde Anderson)
Spain / USA 1984
Rock legend Alice Cooper stars in one of the wildest horror films of the 1980s! When singer Vince Raven returns to his hometown to shoot a music video, he and his crew are confronted by a terrifying local legend. Packs of wild, bloodthirsty dogs seem to be on the loose attacking the population, but in fact, there’s something even more monstrous and supernatural at work: a clawed, demonic beast straight from the depths of hell. Featuring two Alice Cooper songs, “Identity Crisis” and “See Me in the Mirror,” this outrageous slice of Euro horror from Claudio Fragasso, director of the beloved Troll 2, will make you think twice the next time you take your dog out for a walk. *** Rock singer Vincent Raven travels to his home village with his bandmates to shoot a music video there. At a roadblock, they learn that a pack of killer dogs that has gone wild is straying and indiscriminately tearing people apart. Even the local police fall victim to their pack leader, a werewolf-like creature. The group does not believe the warnings of a bloodstained, ghostly old man, but their stay in Vince's parents' house quickly turns into a nightmare: the housekeeper is brutally murdered and soon a heavily armed troop of locals, who Vince wants to leather, invade the property , Because he has kept a secret family secret from his friends about the lynching of his father... On their
Blu-ray,
Camera Obscura use linear PCM tracks (16-bit) in the original English
language plus a German DUB option. It carries some surprising weight.
The score is credited to Grupo Dichotomy (their only credit) and Dick
Maas (Killer Babes). Monster Dog also has music from Alice Cooper - "Identity
Crises", See Me In The Mirror plus, an uncredited, The Alan
Parsons Project (A Dream Within A Dream, The Raven).
Camera Obscura offer optional German or English subtitles on their
Region 'B'
Blu-ray.
Supplements include a 1/2 minute
introduction by Claudio Fragasso (in Italian with optional German or
English Subtitles), a 45-minute featurette; "Lord of the Dogs"
from 2016 with director and screenwriter Claudio Fragasso, screenwriter
Rossella Drudi and production manager Robert Bessi directed by Federico
Caddeo. There is another older featurette; "A Bark from Hell
"with creature designer Antonello Geleng running less than 3-minutes.
Newish is the 26-minute "Ballad of Vincent Raven" with Alice
Cooper discussing the importance of the film to him as he portrayed the
role shortly after leaving the hospital after a battle with alcohol.
There is a condensed 11-minute version of the film from Japan (with
burned-in Japanese subtitles), a photo gallery, and trailers in both
German (SD) and English (HD.)
The Mediabook has an essay (In German) and photos, illustrations.
Monster Dog
is a Euro-trash throwaway, but I quite liked the atmosphere - especially
in the first half. It's full notch better than I had anticipated but
still succumbs to unnecessary gore. I am once again impressed by a
Camera Obscura Blu-ray.
Fans of this genre will be pleased to add this to their collection. |
