Directed by Peter Strickland
UK 2018
The latest from the unique imagination of Peter Strickland, IN FABRIC is a typically distinctive and haunting tale that blends Giallo-infused horror with absurdist dark humour, to ghostly effect. Set against the backdrop of a busy winter sales period at a mysterious Thames Valley department store, the film follows the journey of a cursed but strikingly beautiful blood-red dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences. Strickland’s follow-up to the acclaimed THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY and BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO also stars Hayley Squires, Gwendoline Christie, Julian Barratt, Steve Oram and regular collaborator Fatma Mohamed, and features an unforgettable score by Cavern of Anti-Matter. *** Various owners of a cursed dress pass it from person to person as it destroys their lives. A haunting film by acclaimed director Peter Strickland (Katalin Varga; Berberian Sound Studio; The Duke of Burgundy). Starring Gwendoline Christie and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
On their
Blu-ray,
Curzon Artificial Eye offer the option of DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround
track or a linear PCM stereo track (both 24-bit) in the original English
language. It sounds great (details of how sounds were achieved are
discussed in the commentary) plus a score credited to the Berlin-based
trio 'Cavern Of Anti-Matter', with experimental electronics occasionally
utilized. There is also an 'Audio Descriptive' track available. Curzon Artificial Eye offer optional English
subtitles on their Region 'B'
Blu-ray.
The Curzon Artificial Eye
Blu-ray has
a commentary by director/writer Peter Strickland. He talks about the
film being about the city of Reading, Berkshire (despite being shot in
Croydon, and West Wickham), where he was born, the scary mannequins and
'money shots' used in the opening credits. He is engaging and forthright
about his challenges, intentions, budget constraints and what the film
achieved, the impressive art direction, the film's sound, his own
undiagnosed ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) and what
influenced him in writing it. He is excellent to listen to also being
humorous (at times hard to tell when he is deadpan joking - ex. 'Fatma
Mohamed doing theatre in Transylvania' - which she apparently does!)
There are also 10 interesting deleted scenes running over a dozen
minutes, a slideshows of select stills and a trailer.
One of most inventive and creepy modern
horrors I've seen in a long while. The infusion of occasional humor
suits it so well and doesn't take away from the haunting qualities at
all. To call it Lynchian may be very accurate -
Giallo-esque
too. It definitely has
a free-form quality that this reviewer loved. In Fabric
has Strickland's assuredness - all while professing anarchy. It's a film I am very happy
to have seen on
Blu-ray.
The commentary adds further value and it's a film, like all his works,
that I relish revisiting. Strongly recommended! |
